American Muslim Institution,
a hope for Muslims in America

1. Who is a Moderate Muslim?

Some argue that there is no such thing as a Moderate Muslim, because moderation is what makes a Muslim, we are supposed to be moderates.  The other side of the argument is that, there are three types of Muslims based on their attitudes towards others; Right-wing (~10%), Left-wing (~10%)  and the Moderates (~80%) that is how we broadly describe Christians, Jews, Hindus and others. (The ~% are not empirical)

The right wingers not only strongly believe what they believe, but seek ways to enforce their views on others in varying degrees. The  ISIS, Wahhabis, Talibans, Hindutva, Neocons, extreme Zionists and their likes fall into the Right-wing category. Please remember, we are all slaves of our beliefs, and there is always a room for each one of us to free ourselves.  A small percentage among the right believes in killing or using force to bring a change and or control others.

The left on the other hand go to the other extreme, they are open to every idea and believe in total freedom, their boundaries are too thin. There are issues with it, for example, when the sex freedom took over in the 60's, it generated a lot of VD's. We have to have rules to follow for the common good of all.

A moderate Muslim is someone who respects the otherness of others and accepts the God-given uniqueness of each person. He gets along with everyone and minds his own faith and let others mind theirs,  and he is not hung up with people of other faiths, races or cultures. He is not biased towards Muslims who differ from him, he knows each one is responsible for his own actions and no one will carry other's burdens on the Day of Judgment. He is equally at ease with Muslims of different practices.  He will rarely entertain the idea of controlling or forcing others to be obedient. It is not in his or genes.

It is ironic that all the three groups have a similar goal - to have the society function cohesively, but their understanding of 'how to do it' creates problems.

The argument is made, if you use the term Moderate Muslims it implies, others are not. That is not the case, we are all moderates, and we need to say it to distinguish from those who are not, particularly when all of us are lumped as one. Those who argue against the usage still refer to ISIS as fringe, or those who misinterpret Quran, it is their choice. Aren't they radicals? Doesn't that make the majority of us moderates?

God allows every human to seek repentance till his or her last breath, and we need to strive to work with every one to bring harmony among humanity.

I am comfortable being a Moderate Muslim and this is how I had introduced myself to Dr. Ben Carson, "
I am a moderate Muslim, one of the 6 million of American Moderate Muslims and am with American Muslim Institution.
I would like to hear your opinion on this.

2. Donald Trump is right for once. Burqa is a matter of choice

I am not supporting any candidate right now, but certainly hope to engage with each one of them and let them know that we are available to offer free consulting on Islam and Muslims. I do praise what is good in an individual and critique what is bad.

The full article is pending publication, but here are a few excerpts;
Born and raised in New York, Trump understands diversity. He probably has seen all the cultural expressions of New Yorks inhabitants, and seems to have accepted diversity as a part of Gods creation.

The Burqa is a regional and a cultural wear and not a religious garment. But over a period of time, culture and religion in certain parts of the Middle East and Central Asia have blended and become inseparable. Being cultural, it varies from country to country not all Muslim women wear Burqa; A Muslim womans modesty garments vary from a simple scarf to wrap-around scarf to a shuttle-cock covering. Trump is right when he says Burqa is a matter of individual choice.
The purpose of Hijab (covering) is twofold; to ensure safety of women through modesty, and to prevent men from staring at the obvious. The Quran says to men; Lower your gaze and to women, Cover your bosoms and live freely without apprehensions.
Except for a few women from major metropolitan cities, most Indian women from all faiths will not wear mini-skirts when they are here in America; you cannot get them to wear it either and that is their comfort zone.
I took my kids to every place of worship so they could grow up to be accepting of others, and when I went to the Baptist Church I wore casual clothes, and my jeans had a hole on the back pocket, I was comfortable with that, but my wife was not, so the next day my favorite pants disappeared. Culture means conformity with others in a given situation.
Women should not be a game for men they should have the freedom to wear what gives them comfort. No man should tell her to wear or not to wear the Burqa. It should be her choice.
It is utterly wrong to conclude that Muslim, Sikh, Hindu or Christian men treat their women badly. No, that is not the truth. You will find a similar percentage of men in all groups treating women badly. It has got to go.
What is it to you if a woman wears Burqa or not? What is your gain or loss? Let it be her choice.
Full article has some good examples and explains about the comfort zones. Once published, it will be shared, but either way it will be at www.TheGhouseDiary.com on Tuesday.

3. Should Engagement with mainstream society be our priority?

We have to become Amins of the society, that is being truthful, just, kind, trust worthy and be a safe zone others. Every one should feel safe with us. People have to trust us and be comfortable telling us like they feel, that is when we can solve problems. If we get angry, ridicule or chase them away, problems will linger forever. We have to be good patient listeners.

I am blessed to be a small fraction of an Amin, and to me that is the most important part of being a Muslim, and it may be the foundation of Islam and building peaceful societies.

Here are two interactions this week:

Todd writes, "I agree people should be free and dress as they choose but even liberal minded people will have reactions. I have a really hard time with the face covering. I feel a strong negative whenever I see it in a way I never feel about other kinds of religious garb worn by either men or women. I don't fully understand my reaction, but I think people in public should be recognizable and identifiable ... it feels like a cultural kind of contract or expectation, like covering genitals. In Rome, durring a summer in the '90s it was a thing for men to walk around the city in Speedos and an open front shirt. It was really revolting and I had a strong negative reaction to the immodesty of it. My reaction to face covering is equally strong but for a different reason. My reactions to either instance are way different. I feel tempted mock the immodest tourist. I don;t feel that way about the face covered woman. I just really wish they wouldn't hide themselves away, indicting everyone around them by the need for such protection.."

My response:
Thanks for sharing your feeling, indeed, I had the very same feeling for years... until my late wife gave me a panic attack.... and that changed my attitude as I had to go thru questioning myself and my attitude.  One day, she announced that she will start wearing the Burqa. She had never worn any kind of Hijab other than covering her head during the prayers, which most women do. For a few minutes I was dumbed down; I acted like a snake had bitten me.  I had to arrest myself before speaking, as the thoughts raced. Am I a brute to tell her not to wear? Can I tell her not to wear? Will I go out shopping with her in that Burqa? It was quite a mental exercise for me, and I am glad I was put to the test and finally said, Najma, that is your choice. She was probably testing to see if the man who believes in equality would live up to his words.

-----------------------------

Note: Piyush is an influential nationally know Indian American, he is anti-Muslim from the core and is on my group for the last ten years, I did not cut him off, my challenge was to have him see a different point of view... like Sean Hannity, it took me 5 years for this man to come around and acknowledge things.... and be less ill-ful, it will take some more time. There was one writer at Dallas Morning News who was rabid Islam hater in 2003, today, he is my friend and wants to write a profile about me. He will defend Islam now.

If you are in public and want to change things, you have a huge responsibility to bear, including  humility and insults, but never let your faith, nation or culture be blamed for your  responses, especially those that ridicule others.  You will always win by being good.

Piyush Bhai,

I dont do things to earn respect or something else, I do it because it is my duty, I will do my Dharma and it is up to the creator to give the fruit both of the holy books Quran and the Bhagvad Gita say that. I dont need anything but encourage people to understand each other and live in peace.

Many a Indians admired the Chief Ministers Modi,  Jay Lalitha, Mamta, Yadav and others who went against the central government , and brought prosperity to their states.  Democracy was vibrant then.

The Manmohan Singh Government was on their toes, they had to be very careful as the states questioned them. If there was no opposition, dont know what Manmohan would have done

Now Modi is at the center, and our social fabric of the nation is falling apart, the failure to win Delhi Elections  cut their arrogance down, and now, the failure in Bihar will give them warnings to get their act together.

Who would be better off if the Modi government gets its act together?
Dissent is one of the most valuable asset of democracy.

Take care
Mike

Brother Mike:

Thanks for a very thoughtful response; especially the line "Dissent is one of the most valuable asset of democracy. "

Best wishes,
Piyush
PS.  I hope the opinion stated below by you becomes our "guiding principle."

4. Beyond Tolerance, a call to religious freedom and hopeful action

Washington, DC - October 22, 2015 --  Evangelical Ministers, Imams and community leaders gathered up in Washington, DC to figure out how to co-exist.

It was a powerful event loaded with unpleasant statistics but paved the way for taking the next step; action.  We the Muslims need to seriously focus on positive engagement.  Over 100 people attended the event and per the independent research, the Evangelical pastors have a much lower opinion of Islam and Muslims than the general American public. A heart to heart conversation took place followed by a pledge to improve the situation.  My dear friend Imam Zia Sheikh is a big part of it.
The survey provided the tools and gave us a starting points for engagement. I have taken pictures of the slides, but will get their power point and put together an action plan for consideration.

The event was headed by Pastor Bob Roberts of Texas ( a great friend) and Imam Maged of Adams Center, it was held at the First Baptist Church in Glenarden outside the beltway on North East side of Washington, DC.

I have absorbed these facts with a determination to improve the perceptions about us and hope to give presentations to Muslim and non-Muslim groups in behalf of American Muslim Institution, please let me know if you would like to  arrange a gathering of at least 25 Muslims and non-Muslims who can do simple things to change the perceptions and create a society where all of us can live without apprehensions.

The full story, Catherine Orsborn is the Director of shoulder to shoulder campaign, thank God for her efforts. The report, her speech and pictures are at:  http://theghousediary.blogspot.com/2015/10/beyond-tolerance-call-to-religious.html

5. A successful Parliament of World's Religions

Euphoric is the best word to describe the feeling one had during this conference. Where else can you learn so much about a religion, particularly other's religion? Indeed, it was a myth busting event about Islam. Nearly 10,000 people representing over 200 faith traditions attended the event.

It really was a Muslim rally, the word Muslim was plastered all over the programs, the Chairman is a Muslim, the emcee for the key event was a female Muslim Doctor in her late 20's.... it was a much needed event.  Thank God, there was a good Muslim participation.

Indeed, if we want to become a part of the mainstream, and if ISNA, ICNA and others can join and do the parliament kind event for people of all faiths, Muslims would be much better off in the long run. It will give the opportunity for non-Muslims to see that we are good people just like them and bust the stereo typing that Fox News has created.

Here is a report with some pictures and more will be written about it.

6. Where do you stand politically and socially?

How do your beliefs align with the potential candidates? You may surprise yourselves, and I did, for years I was a Republican fighting and writing about the differences, when I took the quiz, I felt more in tune with Democratic values than Republicans, however, I chose to go independent, as I value the candidates in both parties who represent inclusive values.  More about it at : http://centerforamericanpolitics.blogspot.com/2014/10/republican-no-more-i-have-gone.html

7. Muslim issues across the world; Syria, Rohingya, Palestine, Yemen

Those of you who cannot donate money, time or services, here is a simple option, that is some thing I have done and urge you to consider.  Give up two meals, 2 coffees and 2 sodas a week and send that money to the cause of refugees. You don't have to stand on the sidelines, you can be a part of the whole and you can do it. We need to quit talking sympathies and start the actions, it is good for us spiritually when our talks and acts correlate.

8. India's Modi letting India down

If Prime Minister Modi does not speak up on the issue and stop the extremists of his party members to run over him, he will make India, a Langda India; that is a limping India.

A solid India stands on two firm legs; 1) Prosperity and 2) Social Cohesion.

Prosperity is creating jobs, raising income levels, pulling the ones in ditches onto a level playing field to build a larger Middle class and create an expanded consumer base, whose consumption will create jobs and the economy will multiply and the standards of living will go up. The more people do well, the better the nation does.  Modi is talking big about it and we can give him two years to produce results.

Social Cohesion on the other hand is like a human's body cohesion - heart, brain, kidneys, liver, vision, nose, tongue, touch, hearing, and the flow of blood, breathing and all parts of the body need to function cohesively to be normal. One failure can cause the whole thing to fail or make the body ineffective. If you think the discharge part of the body is less important, wait till it stops, it will cause the whole or part of the body to malfunction.  Like wise, all people have to function together well, and it is in the interest of the body that it makes up the deficiencies, so we as humans, and as Indians have to meet those deficiencies in fellow Indians.

Those of you who are blinded by the love for Mr. Modi, I appeal to you to look for greater love for the nation. Modis will come and go, but the Nation will continue. I am challenging your patriotism, none of us want India to go down, so let our loyalty be to India and not Modi, until he proves that he can keep these two functions in shape, I will hold my praise for him, will you?

I don't want my India to be a Langda India, neither do you? If we all wake up and criticize Mr. Modi, guess what will happen? He will be motivated to do the right thing. Don't you want that?

Arise, awake, and stop not till the goal is reached
. Swami Vivekananda must have meant this for us in 2015 and 2016.

American Muslim Institution,
a hope for Muslims in America

Under the leadership of Ambassador Islam Siddiqui and Dr. Aquilur Rahman, we have formed American Muslim Institution.

Our vision for American Muslims is simple, we would like to shape and see "An America in which all religious and ethnic communities contribute to her success while living in peace and harmony, free from prejudice and discrimination."  As we continue to work with the pace we are working, in about three years, "Americans will see Muslims as their neighbors and fellow citizens, committed to fighting against violent extremism and protecting the homeland."

Our mission is, " To be a credible, proactive voice for American Muslims and to promote a positive image of Muslims through dialogue and understanding both within the American Muslim community and with other American religious communities, civic and political leaders, and opinion makers. "

If you would like to be a part of the team, please arrange for a meeting in your town with at least 25 individual men and women who are committed to bring the change personally or can facilitate it. We hope to make this  a productive meeting for American Muslims.

Ambassador Islam Siddiqui and I, or either one of us will be happy to join you and share our vision.

Pay to get more Facebook 'likes', more 'followers' on Twitter: Unfair practices on social media?

Social media giants Facebook & Twitter have lately come up with similar plans for users who want 'greater clout' or 'more audience'.

If you pay money, you have the option to get more Facebook 'likes' and more Twitter 'followers'.

But is it fair? Content is not the king anymore.

Someone who has extra dollars or rupees, to spend, can use it for branding and get thousands of 'real or unreal' followers on Twitter.

Similar is the case with Facebook. Here, a person can 'buy' the 'likes' for his/her page. Where's the level-playing field on social media?

That's the fundamental question.

I don't feel it is fair. These companies initially had no such schemes but once they reached a level where they are opinion makers and dominate our lives, they have come up with these schemes.

Personally, I don't like it. It's like, you can't earn numbers or grades, so just pay for it. Is it fair?

Take for example, movie personalities, TV persons, sport stars or anybody who came late on these platforms, and have less followers.

Or those who don't have anything interesting to share but feel upset that others have more likes or followers, can avail these schemes.

They can just pay money and get past the people who genuinely earned the following.

If you pay, Twitter shows your profile to many more people as 'suggested' in 'Who to Follow' advisory on the top right.

If you pay, your page is displayed to more people who are suggested by Facebook, to like the page.

On Facebook, you get option to target people in particular region or people of a particular age group.

We like it or not, Facebook and Twitter dominate our lives so much, that we have to live with it--their policies. They are here for business, aren't they. And that's what business is!!!

Bajrang Dal engineers riot in Karnataka after Muslim barber refused to shut shop on 'Tuesday'

In a shocking incident, right-wing extremist group Bajrang Dal engineered a communal riot in a town in Mangalore district, after a Muslim man refused to shut his shop on 'Tuesday'.

This riot over' barber's insistence on haircut' took place in Nelliyadi in Mangalore. The barber, Salman, opened his salon but was asked by local Bajrang Dal leader to shut it, 'as Hindus don't get haircut on Tuesday'.

When Salman refused, Bajrang Dal and allied Hindutva groups' members attacked Muslims and ransacked property. Dozens were injured and property worth lakhs was gutted.

Incidentally, Karnataka is ruled by Congress but right-wing extremists' activities have increased in the State, especially, in Mangalore district in recent years.

This report published in Hindustan Times, tells that Bajrang Dal leader Ravi Bally asked Salman to down the shutters in view of 'local sentiments' but he refused. Popular Front of India (PFI) members' names has also come up in this rioting. PFI is a Muslim group active in this region.

This year alone, over 150 communal incidents have occurred in Mangalore. The district was once known for communal harmony, education and openness among members of different religious communities.

The voice of Moderate Muslims in America

The Voice of Moderate Islam in America - Mike Ghouse:

Since 9/11, Americans across the political spectrum have been asking, Who are the authentic moderates of Islam, and where are they? And, Who speaks for American Muslims? Talk show hosts, journalists, lawmakers, interfaith authorities and thought leaders have asked: Where are moderate Muslims to join the debate on social, civic, religious and political issues, including racism and violent extremism?

Their spokesman is Dr. Mike Mohamed Ghouse, who recently has moved to Washington, D.C.

Dr. Ghouse is a proud, unapologetic Moderate Muslim and a passionate advocate of Pluralism in religion, society, politics, race, dining, clothing, dancing, sports and every aspect of life. He is a public speaker, thinker, writer and a commentator who is considered an authority on Pluralism and Interfaith relations in America, and he offers pluralistic solutions on issues of the day.

Who is a Moderate Muslim? Some one who lives his life and let others live theirs, and some one who minds his own business. He or she will not look down upon other people's faiths, traditions and practices, but considers them to be as unique as his or her own, but never inferior.  In every group; religious, social, national, political or racial, there is always the right and extreme right who is intolerant and wants to impose his or her ideals on others. The left and extreme left on the other hand has no boundaries. Moderates are usually 90% of any group, but they do not engage in anything and mind their own business and take up when things  when they really get out of hand. The new breed of Moderates like Dr. Ghouse are full of passion to save the nation and the communities for the common good of all Americans.

What is Pluralism? It is simply, he says, respecting the otherness of others, and accepting the God-given uniqueness of each one of the 7 billion of us. When we do that, conflicts fade and solutions emerge.

He is respected by his peers as a patriotic American and firmly stands for the American values such as the freedoms established by the First Amendment. In fact, Dr. Ghouse considers the U.S. Constitution a sacred document that respects and honors every human being.  He exalts Americas immortal Declaration of Independence.  While living in Dallas for more than three decades, he became a fixture at Veterans-Day ceremonies and July 4th parades.  He has spoken at innumerable luncheons for homeless veterans and visits with veterans at VA hospitals.  Dr. Ghouse drives around the Veterans cemeteries on Memorial Day and offers prayers for all those who have defended our freedom.  He will fight and defend the freedom of America any time and all the times.

Dr. Ghouse also served as a Commissioner at City of Carrollton, Texas for two terms.

He has contributed significantly to the richness of America, and his gift to America would be the gift of Pluralism, an old attitude emerging as a new discipline that he intends to teach and promote through workshops. Dr. Ghouse hopes to train Americas candidates for higher office regarding what the founding fathers meant when they declared that all humans are equal.

Dr. Ghouse believes in building a cohesive America, where no American has to live in apprehension or fear of the other and which will be achieved through personal interaction.   To that end, he has organized 17 Thanksgiving celebrations; 12 Unity Days USA; and 10 ceremonies to honor victims of Holocaust and Genocides.

Dedicated Both to Islam and to the Other

Dr. Ghouse defines moderate Muslim as someone who respects the otherness of others and accepts the God-given uniqueness of each person in Gods creation.  He has published more than 1000 articles on diverse aspects of Islam and maintains a blog on QuranShariaBlasphemy, Apostasy, Hijab, Reforms, Ramadan, Womens issues and community relations.  He is driven by the pluralistic wisdom in Quran, and his mission is authenticated by many a verse from Quran, including 49:13, which generally means because each one of us is created to be an unique individual, we are bound to have conflicts between family members, nations, religions and communities, and it is because we dont know each other and when we start to genuinely learn about the other, myths disappear into thin air and peace dawns on us.  There is a full video of his talk on
Pluralism in Islam.

Print Media: Dr. Ghouse has published more than 3000 articles on a variety of topics, of these, there more than 1000 on Pluralism, including 225 pieces on Pluralism in the Texas Faith column in the Dallas Morning News and 130 articles at Huffington Post.  He also has published articles on politics, foreign policy, movies, sports, culture and motivation.

TV and Radio: Dr. Ghouse has appeared in more than 150 TV shows, including 102 with Sean Hannity alone. He has served as subject expert hundreds of times on nationally syndicated radio. Many listeners have heard his informed opinions at the time of the Quran Burning issue in Mulberry, Florida, and the period of Quran Bashing in Dallas Texas.  He notably defended the 9/11 Mosque in Lower Manhattan, and he has blogged on the Peter King investigations and other issues. He is in the forefront of dealing with issues and offering pluralistic solutions.

On the day of 9/11, he was on Radio all day, taking calls from Mayors, religious and community leaders across the City to bring coherence to the chaos created on that day, and ever since, he has dedicated that day every year to serve and unite Americans for a strong America.

Politics:  A political independent, Dr. Ghouse says that he votes for the candidates who put America first, whether he or she is a Republican or Democrat. He refuses to compromise his loyalty to America with loyalty to a political party.  He maintains a blog on Politics and has written more than 300 columns on politics in America.  He has written about Presidents Bush and Obama, and presidential candidates Clinton, McCain, Romney, Gingrich, Cain, Perry, Christie, Bush, Trump and Carson.

Foreign policy:  Dr. Ghouse has always taken a moderate approach toward foreign policy issues and offered pluralistic solutions on issues of the day, including but not limited to Israel, Palestine, Iran, Afghanistan, India, Egypt, Malaysia, Indonesia and other nations.

Human rights:  Dr Ghouse has stood up for the rights of every human regardless of his or her affiliation and has been writing a forthcoming book titled, Standing Up for Others, Standing up for the rights of all; from Atheists to Zoroastrians and every one in between including Native Americans, and the LGBT community.   This book will be dedicated to Sean Hannity, Rev. Sun Myung Moon, and Harbans Lal (his first boss) with a special note.

Quran:  It is one of the most misunderstood books on the earth, even by Muslims.  He sees it as a pluralistic document to build cohesive societies, where God is not an exclusive property of anyone but a universal energy that belongs to all, loves us all, and cares for our well being.  Dr. Ghouse is producing a short book addressing the myths and facts about Quran, and this book will be dedicated to Pastor Bob Roberts of Texas, the big name among Evangelical Pastors and Imam Zia Shaikh from Irving, Texas, both of them have understood the full meaning of pluralism, i.e., respecting the otherness of others.

Film:  Sacred is a full feature film, and it is about changing perceptions about Muslims and Muslims adopting the non-violent principles enshrined in the teachings of Jesus Christ, Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) and Mahatma Gandhi.

Documentary: Dr. Ghouses documentary film in progress is premised on Americas promise that all humans are created equal. He believes that we have seen a tremendous progress since independence, but we have a lot more to do.  A rough draft of the film is in a video clip at
www.AmericaTogetherFoundation.com

Pope Francis:  He is a blessing to mankind, and is one of the greatest human beings of this century.  Dr. Ghouse has written more than 25 articles on Pope Francis with lots of love and admiration for the man.

Dallas Morning News "Over and over you hear it said: If Muslims oppose terrorism, why don't they stand up and say it? If that has been you, Mike Ghouse ought to be your hero."

Phyllis Curott:  Vice Chair, Parliament of Worlds Religions," Mike Ghouse has the courage of his convictions - he carries a spark of inspiration that can only be called Divine. It illuminates the world around him, enabling him to see clearly the beauty and grace that resides in every sacred path and in each person who walks that path.

Religion News Service
: " (RNS) A Florida pastor plans to burn a pile of Qurans on the 9/11 anniversary, and interfaith activist Mike Ghouse says, It is not what (the pastor) will do, it is what we do as Americans and American Muslims that matters.

Phillip M Ramsaroop: "
I first met Dr. Ghouse in the mid-nineties as Past President and a member of the Board of the Dallas Fort Worth Hindu Temple and as a member of the Chapel Committee of Thanksgiving Square in Dallas, Texas.   I was pleasantly surprised, though a Muslim, he participated and volunteered his time and resources on the Hindu Temples projects and activities.  I later discovered that he did the same for other religious and cultural communities"

Mulberry Ledger : "The book burner (Terry Jones) came to Mulberry in hate and the Muslims (Mike Ghouse) came to Mulberry in peace to counter the hate. The Muslims summed it up best when they prayed for the fallen heroes who died on 9/11.

Saudi Gazette: "Thank you for your commitment towards a peaceful solution, Mike. It is the media who should thank you for your commendable cause."

Bill Matthews:  "Mike Ghouse exemplary work for pluralism exudes acceptance to bridge beyond imagined differences to express the exemplary conviction that humanity lives and thrives on working together towards common goals, to overcome fear, suspicion and prejudice."

Q&A: Bridegroom Entering the Womens Wedding Hall

Questions:
Question by Sameh Rayhan Abu Myassara
Assalamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullah wa Barakatuh, is there something forbidden about the bridegroom informing the women that he will enter to see his bride in the wedding, so all the women sit down and cover themselves and only his female Maharem will stay around him in order to congratulate him, whilst the foreign women have covered up and sat in their seats and no mixing has occurred between them and the bridegroom when he entered the function hall? May Allah bless you all.

Question by Khilafah waad Allah,
Is it allowed for the bridegroom to sit next to his bride in order to adorn her with jewelry knowing that all of the women are covered and the majority of them are from the Maharem and then he leaves?

Question by Sofyan Qasrawi
Assalamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullah wa Barakatuh, our esteemed Sheikh I have a question which is: If the wedding time for the Maharem is set and another time is set for the non-Maharem, is it allowed for the bridegroom to enter the function hall when it is time for the Maharem only?
Answer:
Wa Alaikum Assalam wa Rahamatullah wa Barakatuh,
Your three questions are of the same topic, and so we shall answer them collectively, biithnAllah.
We have previously responded on the 6th of Jumada ath-Thani, 1424 AH, corresponding with 08/08/2003 CE, to the topic of mixing in wedding function halls via a detailed response, and the following was mentioned in it:
- Mixing between the men and women is forbidden, and there is an abundance of evidence for that, and the life of Muslims in the period of Messenger of Allah ?, and the companions who came after him ?, have been witness to that. Mixing is not permitted except what is necessitated by the Shariah as stated in the text of the Book of Allah or the Sunnah of His Messenger, such as buying and selling, ties of kinship etc.
The text does not mention the permissibility of men and women in the function halls (weddings), rather it is mentioned in the time of the Messenger of Allah ? and his companions that the women would be with the bride all together alone, and the men alone. In this way, mixing in the function halls is forbidden, without any exceptions, and what has been mentioned in weddings is that in the proceeding of the bride to the house of her husband, it is allowed that she is taken by men and women to her husbands house, then the men separate from the women
Upon that, the existence of men and women in function halls without separation; meaning one hall and not two halls, is forbidden (haram). Also, if the awrahs are exposed, as it is common these days, then the haram is even worse. Moreover, having the bridegroom sitting next to his bride surrounded with women, Maharem and non-Maharem, is forbidden (haram), especially when they expose their awrah, as it is common these days for the women around the bride
As for saying that this affliction being widespread does not make the Haram a Halal, and it is a saying repeated by the person contradicting the Shariah. There are also Hadiths which commend the people who clenched onto their Deen as those who clench onto a hot coal due to the intensity of the affliction as the Muslim is when he clings to his Islam.
The Prophet of Allah ? says: ??????? ????? ???????? ??????? ?????????? ??????? ????? ??????? ???????????? ????? ?????????.  A time will come upon the people where the patient among them on his Deen is similar to that who clenches his fist on a hot coal
According to that, having the bridegroom sitting with his bride in a function hall mixed with men and women is forbidden (haram), as well as the bridegroom sitting with his bride in a function hall for the women with the women around them, Maharem and non-Maharem, is forbidden (haram), so if this included the uncovering of the womens awrah and being in a state of tabarruj, it is haram more and more
However, if the function hall has only his Maharem, then he is allowed to enter the hall and sit with his bride and with them and adorn her in jewelry and then leave, and then afterwards the other women may enter.
In conclusion:
  1. Mixing between men and women in the wedding function halls is not allowed whether the awrah are uncovered or not, and if the forbidden awrah are uncovered then the haram is even worse.
  2. The bridegroom is not allowed to enter the function hall of the women in order to sit with his bride as long as the women foreign to him are in the hall, even if he informs the women to cover themselves before he enters, and they dont come near the bridegroom except for his Maharem as long as the foreign women are in the function hall and in their seats watching him; meaning in the hall, it is not allowed.
  3. It is allowed for the bridegroom to enter and sit with his bride in the function hall if a certain time for only the Maharem has been allocated, by which no one else other than the Maharem are in the hall throughout his entrance and his sitting with his bride, then the bridegroom leaves afterwards and the rest of the women enter after he leaves.
