Quran - a New American translation.

Quran - A new American Translation | www.WorldMuslimCongress.com

Indeed there are nearly 300 English translations in the market now, and each one reflects the experiences of the translator, as it should.
Each translation slightly differs from the other, fulfilling what Prophet Muhammad wanted, to paraphrase him, " I am leaving this book for you to read and understand." The emphasis was YOU, Mind you, he did not assign an interpreter to refer to, and instead he expected each one will use his personal reference to understand the book while maintaining the central theme building cohesive societies Islam is also called the religion of human nature.

The American Quran Pissing Off the Saudis
The Study Quran
puts this great religious work in historical perspective.
A new translation of the Quran, with commentary, is causing a stirand maybe something of a revolutionin the world of English-speaking Muslims.
Whys that? Because Salafistsadherents of a very conservative brand of Islamhave dominated the world market for Qurans for decades.
Funded by the oil-rich royal family in Saudi Arabia, which has an especially rigid Wahhabi branch of Islam, the Salafis have exported their teachers, their mosques, their audio and video productions, and religious texts across the Arab world and into Pakistan, Europe, and North America, quashing alternate interpretations that dont fit their narrow views.
Seeing this new translation as a challenge to their orthodoxy in English-speaking countries, Salafis are none too pleased. In online discussions and reviews, influential Salafis are panning the volume, called The Study Quran,  as a soft-bellied facsimile that might be fine for academia, but not fit for following.
In fact, this no mere academic debate. Followers of the Saudi-Wahhabi-Salafi version of Islam in Europe and the United States are increasingly seen by law enforcement as a pool from which radical jihadis can draw recruits.
Some strains of this Salafi interpretation have popularized takfirismthe practice by which some Muslims declare that others are not true believers. The aftereffects are clear in fringe jihadi groups like the self-declared caliphate that calls itself the Islamic State, where those who believe differently are deemed apostates who can be, and are, slaughtered en masse. The vast majority of Salafis are not jihadis and not takfiris. But those who are use their understanding of their Quran to justify killing Shia Muslims, Yazidis, adulterers, gays, and anyone else who runs afoul of their zealotry.
Generations of the worlds Muslims have, now, grown up in the shadow of this Saudi religious empire, ignoring previous centuries of rigorous religious discourse, debate, and dissent.
The Study Quran, setting the record straight, may come as something of a revelation to Muslims and anyone else interested in Islam who speaks English. It is a formidable academic endeavor, and since it was published in November it has been flying off the shelves in a massive hardback edition. (It is also available now on Kindle.
The  editors have compiled a new translation, new commentary, and drawn on dozens of the most prominent
mufassirs (interpreters or exegetes), many of whom have never before been accessible to an English-speaking audience. Indeed, very few of the sources cited in The Study Quran are available in English translation, head editor Seyyed Hossein Nasr told The Daily Beast. One soon comes across nuances that are unmentioned or ignored by extremists. The Study Quran notes, for instance, that verse 47:4used by ISIS to justify beheadingsfocuses on the brevity of the act, as it is confined to battle and not a continuous command. This interpretation would seem to challenge extremists who attempt to carry out such acts on civilians, whether on the streets of London or in Syria.
The Salafi scholars who have monopolized English-language Muslim resources are disturbed and even frightened by this textual revolution that puts them back in their place.
Salafism was not in the mainstream of the Muslim tradition, said Nasr. It rejected centuries of Islamic thought. The scholars contributing to The Study Quran, who are both Sunni and Shia, also break with the ultra-Orthodox animus against Shiism.
The Study Qurans rich commentary, crowding around a few verses on any given onion-paper page of the hardback edition, seeks to remedy the previous absence of solid historical discourse. After all, Nasr said, even centuries ago the yearly pilgrimage to Mecca meant that exegetes, or interpreters of holy texts, were able to have a much richer exchange of ideasand much more knowledge of one anotherthan European thinkers of the time.
Its no surprise then, that Abu Eesa Niamatullaha British Salafi with a large social media presencecautioned followers tempted by The Study Quran to avoid it. Like the plague.

It doesn't just have mistakes, it's actually dangerous, Niamatullah said. This is advice to the 99 percent of people here, those who don't have the detailed tools necessary to separate the wheat from the chaff.
Though Sunni Islam formally lacks a clerical class, Niamatullah expressed concern that those who lack proper religious or academic training might be swayed from the orthodox path by the new edition.
My point being that I see it as absolutely a threat to orthodox Sunni creed that such translations and commentaries, but more importantly, such deviated individuals such as Nasr being given a prominent platform to the hearts and minds of the basic masses who can't filter through the nonsense like you can, he added in a comment.
A more moderate review, recommended by prominent cleric Yasir Qadhi to hundreds of thousands of followers on social media, acknowledges that the rigor of The Study Quranis apparent after even a cursory reading, but nonetheless it is an academic and educational work, and as such includes commentaries from sources that may not be considered orthodox depending on ones denominational orientation. (Qadhi recentlydistanced himself from the Salafi label and critiqued some aspects of the movement.)
Some of the Sufi commentaries can come off as uncomfortably esoteric, the author Mobeen Vaid writes. Kharijite positions are occasionally expounded upon, and not for the purpose of refutation. (Kharijites were a rebel sect in the first century of of Islam.)
The differences that make it suitable for academia but not practice go all the way down to the understanding of the very nature of the Quran. For believers, says Vaid. the Quran doesn't say anything, God does.
And yet, The Study Quran fills part of what some scholars see as a perpetual hole in the study of Islam. Quranic translations abound, but centuries of commentary, debate, and context have long been the exclusive domain of those with a strong command of Arabic.
"We appear to be amidst a deluge of English translations of the Quran," Scott Lucas, a professor at the University of Arizona, wrote in 2014, reflecting on the proliferation of translations in the prior decade.

Pretty much any Quran given out in a dawa, or religious outreach, program almost anywhere in the world has its roots in Saudi Arabia. Most of them use a translation completed by Yusuf Ali, an Indian-born, British-educated scholar who died in the mid-20th century. Published in 1938, it included not only Alis translation, but also parenthetical commentary on meaningmuch of which has been stripped out by its Salafi adapters.
The first Quran ever owned by this reporter was an Ali translation, distributed through a Chelsea-based dawa program to a bank teller, who unloaded it to this student of religion when she was still a teen. The thick hardcover has the scripture in two varieties: the original Arabic, as well as an English translation.
(Significantly, The Study Quran, already voluminous, does not include the original Arabic, the language in which Allah delivered his message to Muhammad. But the Arabic text is now readily available online and in many smaller volumes for comparison.)
Ali wasnt the first translator of the Quran into English, of course. One of the earliest widely available translations was by George Sale, and it served as the standard for nearly two centuries. Its rife with annotations that point to Sales Christian understanding of the Mohammedans holy scripture. More recent translations have come from feminists and creative translations that assign each Arabic word oneand only oneEnglish equivalent.
And The Study Quran surely wont be the last. The authors main goal, after all, is not a definitive translationbut a demonstration that different interpretations were established, well known, and rigorously discussed over the centuries, Nasr said.

A New Turning Point in Western Economies?

Global stock markets have started the year badly (New York Stock Exchange down 8%, MSCI World Market Index down 10%, Japan down by 19%). While many will view these markets as little more than gambling tools as they do not involve direct responsibility and ownership in the same way that Islamic company structure dictates, nevertheless, hundreds of millions of people globally depend on these markets for their retirement wealth and pension funds. They have also become a barometer for the success of the economies in which these companies operate. Central planners view the success of stock and bond markets as key to long term stability and the viability of Capitalism. As a result the main US and European markets have established plunge protection teams who will invest government money to ensure day to day stability, and the ability to suspend markets if they fall too far too quickly. But when short term intervention in markets (which are supposed to be free to go up and down!) becomes core government policy, it is a recipe for a major collapse. It is arguable that Central Bank policies in the US. Europe and Asia (Japan) in excessive money printing (Quantitative Easing) largely went into propping up stock and bond markets and consequently recent cut backs in QE have coincided with the fall offs in the stock markets, particularly in the US.
Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen in testimony to Congress this past week stated that negative interest rates are still very much an option in the US. So after 7 years of virtually zero interest rates failing to stimulate sufficient growth, the next step is to go to negative rates, where banks will be charged if they hold reserves charges which will be passed onto savers. Negative interest rates now form official policy in Japan, Sweden, Switzerland and Denmark (23% of all Capital markets!). This represents forced confiscation of wealth from the middle classes. Banks will continue to charge high rates of interest (usury) for loans and mortgages, but will force those with money to invest it (into the stock market or government bonds ideally according to policy) in order to avoid charges on their capital (the negative rate). In reality this is a pre-cursor to removing all paper based money and the introduction of electronic money (as the public will move to hold cash rather than be charged to keep their money in the bank). Governments will argue they are working against crime and terrorism in banning cash, but the truth lies in controlling all monetary transactions.
The other major danger to Central Bank plans is gold and silver which is the ultimate in real money. As you cannot print new gold and silver in the same way that a bank merely prints more money or creates virtual electronic money like bitcoin; gold and silver acts as a real control over government policies. Other than storage fees, gold and silver has no counterparty risk (for example a major bank failure as threatened in 2008). It is little wonder that gold is up 18% since the start of the year (and silver 14%). Despite consistent efforts in suppressing the price of gold and silver over the past 4 years via paper based derivative trading, it now appears that the markets for real physical gold and silver (not paper derivative contracts which merely represent a promise to provide G/S at a future date) are beginning to take greater control in the price setting. China and India alone bought the equivalent of the worlds new gold production in the past year with it flowing from West to East.
A true role for Gold and Silver
The many Quranic references to gold and silver not only as money but as a measurement for zakathudud limits, etc, serve as clear evidences that these are to be used as currency in the future Khilafah state (Caliphate).
??????????? ??????????? ????????? ???????????? ????? ????????????? ??? ??????? ?????? ???????????? ????????? ???????
And those who hoard gold and silver and spend it not in the way of Allah give them tidings of a painful punishment.
(Surah Tawbah 9:34)
The prohibition of hoarding currency together with forbidding interest of any type (including negative) acts as strong motivators for the circulation of wealth. Rather than gamble wealth in derivative or stock markets, Muslims seek investment in tangible businesses in which they are accountable for the correct running of those businesses. Generous spending in society is a natural course for peoples that understand that their rizq is truly from Allah ?????? ??????, rather than the contradictory gimmicks that secular governments dream up to try and cajole populations into spending and investment into yet more haram schemes (stock, bond, derivative markets). With gold and silver acting as a true store of value rather than the shifting foundations of sand which paper and electronic currencies represent.

Q&A: Salatul Istikhara

Question:
Assalamu alaikum, I want to know what is Salatul Istikhara, and does the person who made Istikhara see something in his dream after performing the Istikhara? Please answer as soon as possible, Jazakoum Allah Khayran.
From Joud Ridwan Ridwan

Answer:
Wa alaikoum l salam wa Rahmatu Allah wa Barakatuh,
The Prophet ? showed Salatul Istikhara via a thorough and adequate demonstration in a Hadith narrated by Bukhari and others on the authority of Jaber bin Abdullah, may Allah be pleased with both of them, he said: The Prophet of Allah ? would teach us to pray for guidance in all matters, as he ? used to teach us a chapter from the Quran, he ? said:
????? ????? ?????????? ??????????? ???????????? ???????????? ???? ?????? ???????????? ????? ????????: ?????????? ?????? ????????????? ?????????? ???????????????? ????????????? ???????????? ???? ???????? ?????????? ????????? ???????? ????? ????????? ?????????? ????? ????????? ???????? ???????? ?????????? ?????????? ???? ?????? ???????? ????? ????? ???????? ?????? ??? ??? ?????? ?????????? ??????????? ??????? ???? ????? ??????? ??????? ????????? ??????????? ??? ??????????? ???? ????? ??????? ??? ?????? ?????? ?????? ???????? ????? ????? ???????? ????? ??? ??? ?????? ?????????? ??????????? ??????? ???? ????? ??? ??????? ??????? ????????? ??????????? ?????? ???????????? ??????? ????????? ??? ???????? ?????? ?????? ????? ????????? ?????: ?????????? ?????????
When one of you has a decision, he should perform two cycles of prayer other than the obligations, then let him say: O Allah, I seek guidance from your knowledge and power from your might, and I ask you from your tremendous favor. Verily, you have power and I do not have power, and you know and I do not know. You are the knowing of the unseen. O Allah, if you know that this matter is good for my religion and my livelihood and my ending (or he said: if it is better for my present and latter needs), then decree it for me and make it easy for me and bless me in it. But if you know that this matter is evil for my religion and my livelihood and my ending (or he said: if it is worse for my present and latter needs), then divert it from me and keep me away from it, and decree for me what is good for me and make me content with it. The Prophet added that the person should then mention his need.
It is clear from this Hadith how to perform the Salatul Istikhara (prayer for guidance), so whoever wanted to seek guidance from Allah ?????? ?????? should pray two cycles (rakah) of prayer other than the obligations (nafaleh) with the intention of seeking guidance and after completion from the prayer he should make Supplication of seeking guidance (Istikhara) that is mentioned in the Hadith. By this, he would have performed the prayer for guidance or the Supplication for guidance, as this is the method of performing the prayer for guidance However, there are other matters pertaining to the prayer for guidance, which are:
  1. If a person has a decision to make, after he has studied the matter from all sides, and he is inclined towards a certain act and wanted to go with it, by then he prays two cycles of prayer (rakah) and makes Supplication of guidance and does them while he prays to Allah ?????? ?????? to facilitate it for him if it is good or divert it away from him if it is bad. This means that he should not pray for guidance except until he studies the matter from all of its sides and is inclined to go for it, that is when he prays and makes the Supplication for guidance and then goes for it He should not pray for guidance except after studying the matter and is inclined to go forward with it. Look at the Hadith: ????? ????? ?????????? ??????????? ???????????? ???????????? ???? ?????? ???????????? ????? ????????: ?????????? ?????? ????????????? ?????????? When one of you has a decision, he should perform two cycles of prayer other than the obligations, then let him say: O Allah, I seek guidance from your knowledge (Narrated by Bukhari).
  2. It is not proper to relate from the Prophet ? that he ? has connected prayer for guidance to a vision seen during a dream as far as I know that even though he ? recommended people to pray for guidance, he ? didnt connect its result to dreams, as it was reported in a Hadith from Jaber who said:??????????? ??? ??????????? ???? ????? ??????? ??? ????? ?????: ??????????? ?????? ???????????? ??????? ????????? ??? ???????? ?????? ?????? ????? ????????? then decree it for me and make it easy for me and bless me in it and said: then divert it from me and keep me away from it, and decree for me what is good for me and make me content with it which show that he ? did not connect prayer for guidance with a vision seen in the dream. He rather made the matter connected to the facilitation and decree of Allah ?????? ??????, meaning that the person seeks to go with the matter which he prayed guidance for, so if there was good in it, Allah ?????? ?????? will decree it for him and facilitate it for him, else He ?????? ?????? will divert it away. Therefore, prayer for guidance is shifting the matter and the choice to Allah ?????? ?????? so that He ?????? ?????? chooses for the person praying for guidance, and to facilitate the matter which He ?????? ?????? sees as good for him. So, if He ?????? ?????? doesnt deem it as good for him, He ?????? ?????? will divert it away from him.
  3. The saying of the Prophet ? in the Hadith of Jaber:??????????? ?????? ???????????? ??????? ????????? ??? ???????? ?????? ?????? ????? ????????? then divert it from me and keep me away from it, and decree for me what is good for me and make me content with it. Some people understand from it that the feeling of relief is considered a sign for the choice of Allah ?????? ??????, meaning that if someone feels relieved then he should go for the matter, but if he feels unsettled and he diverts from it then he should keep away from it, since the diversion of the person praying for guidance occurs when the heart feels unsettled and wants to stay away Ash-Shawkani reported in the book Neil Al-Awtar from An-Nawawi who said:It is supposed that after performing the prayer for guidance to do what makes one relieved, so he is not supposed to rely on a feeling of relief that he had prior to the prayer for guidance. Instead, the person praying for guidance should leave his choice directly or else it would not be praying for guidance from Allah ?????? ??????, it would rather be praying for guidance according to his wishes. He might also be dishonest in asking for a choosing and acknowledging lack of knowledge and ability and affirm their presence in Allah ?????? ??????, so if he honest in this, he would acknowledge his lack of ability and strength and of choosing for himself. However, what I am tending for is that this sign is not correct because there is no text about it, and the Hadith which some people rely on in this matter is a Hadith with a very weak chain of narration as the researchers mentioned, and the Hadith is:
Ibn As-Sinni reported in The Work of the Day and Night stating Abu Al-Abbas bin Qutaiba Al-Asqalani informed us, and told to us by Obeid Allah bin Al-Himayri, praised by Ibrahim bin Al-Alaa bin An-Nadr bin Anas bin Malik, praised by my father, on the authority of his father, on the authority of his grandfather, said: The Prophet of Allah ? said: ??? ??????? ????? ???????? ???????? ??????????? ??????? ????? ?????? ????????? ????? ??????? ????? ??????? ???????? ????? ????????? ??????? ????????? ????? O Anas, if you have decided about a matter, then pray for guidance about it from your Lord seven times, then look at what your heart is inclined towards, then there is goodness in it. Ibn Hijr in Fatih Al-Bari An-Nawawi said in Al-Athkaar to do after prayer for guidance what brings the sense of relief to the person, and his evidence for that is a Hadith reported by Anas at Bin As-Sunni: If you have decided about a matter, then pray for guidance about it from your Lord seven times, then look at what your heart is inclined towards, then there is goodness in it, if it could be confirmed then it could be relied on, but its chain of narration is very weak
Therefore, what only remains is what we have mentioned in the first point that the Hadith mentions that prayer for guidance occurs after going for a matter, meaning that after making the decision of doing something based on a holistic study of it and all aspects suggest the inclination towards it What testifies to the validity of this understanding is the Hadith narrated by Al-Hakim in his Mustadrak upon the account of Abu Ayyoub Al-Ansari that the Prophet of Allah ? said:
??????? ?????????? ????? ????????? ?????????? ?????????? ????? ????? ??? ?????? ??????? ???????? ????? ????? ??????? ??????? ???????????? ????? ????: ?????????? ??????? ???????? ????? ????????? ?????????? ????? ????????? ???????? ???????? ??????????? ?????? ???????? ???? ??? ?????????? ??????????? ?????????? ??????? ??? ??? ?????? ??????????? ?????????? ???????????? ???? ?????? ????? ????????? ??????? ??? ??? ?????? ??????????? ?????????? ???????????? ????
Keep the engagement a secret, then perform ablution and perform it well, then pray as much as Allah ?????? ?????? has written for you, then praise Allah and glorify Him, then say: O Allah You are Able and I am not, You know and I do not, You know the Unknown, so if You see that this person name her by her name is good for me in my Deen, my life, and my afterlife then decree her for me, but if there is another person who is better for me in my Deen, my life, and my afterlife, then decree her for me. It is clear from this Hadith that the person praying for guidance has decided to get engaged to a certain woman, but he didnt publicize it rather kept it a secret, then he prayed for guidance from Allah about it and left it in the Hands of Allah ?????? ?????? so that He decrees her for him if there is goodness in her, or to decree someone else for him if there is goodness in someone other than her, and he didnt connect what he saw in the dream or in the feeling of relief
In conclusion, what I am tending towards in the topic of prayer for guidance is:
If a person decided about something after he has studied it from all its angles, and he is inclined towards going for it and is aiming to do it, only then that he pray two cycles and say the Supplication of praying for guidance and to do that while he is supplicating to Allah Almighty to facilitate it for him if there is goodness in it or divert it away if there is evil in it.
This means that he doesnt pray for guidance only until he studies the matter from all angles and is inclined towards going for it, then he prays and supplicates for guidance and then goes for it Look at this Hadith: ????? ????? ?????????? ??????????? ???????????? ???????????? ???? ?????? ???????????? ????? ????????: ?????????? ?????? ????????????? ?????????? When one of you has a decision, he should perform two cycles of prayer other than the obligations, then let him say: O Allah, I seek guidance from your knowledge (Narrated by Bukhari).
This is what I have outweighed from the Hadith, that he should not pray for guidance while waiting to see something in a dream, or wait until he sees what he is inclined to do from either matters, because the Hadith says: ????? ????? ?????????? ??????????When one of you has a decision. As I mentioned earlier, this is what I found most preponderant from some of the sayings, but only Allah ?????? ??????knows what is most right.

Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) must end now

Female Genital Mutilation |  www.WorldMuslimCongress.com
This is a brutal practice of cutting the genital part of women by insecure men of the past, but continued today by equally insecure men.  I have put together several articles here below.  It is cruel, inhuman and violates the inalienable rights of women to life, liberty and happiness, and secondly, the religious leader Syedna Burhanuddin of the Bohra Muslim Community has refused to stop the practice.  I have written a letter to him but he has since passed away and his successor is no different.
Muslim and Christians should join hands to stop this, as it is practiced by a fraction of them in the name of their religion.
Many have taken up to stop this inhuman practice and we should all join this.
Warning: The pictures too graphic, especially the one with raw blade. Most of the pictures are from Africa to illustrate the point and perhaps due to the limited availability of such practices.

Quran; A new translation by Safi Kaskas

Quran Translation by Safi Kaskas |www.QuraanToday.com

I welcome this new translation of Quran by Safi Kaskas and David Hungerford among the multitudes of translations. Indeed there are nearly 300 English translations in the market now, and each one reflects the experiences of the translator, as it should.

Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) understood human nature, and believed in freedom, an inalienable rights of individuals.  He has repeatedly said, there is no compulsion in religion and that you cannot push any one to believe against his or her will.  Thus, in his last sermon, he said (paraphrase), I am leaving this book to you to read and understand it, hang on to it, and you cannot go wrong with it.

Mind you, he did not assign the interpretation of the book (Quran) to anyone. He did not say, look, from here on if you have questions about the book, check with So and So Shaikh. He know each person will read and understand through his own prism and that is why Islam is also called a Deen of fitra (human nature). I would say don't judge Islam, Christianity or any faith by the actions of the individuals, religion stands on its own - a pristine system to create peaceful societies,  most people get that right and a few don't.

Quran cannot be more clearer than this, it repeats endlessly that no one is responsible for your actions but you, and it is your responsibility to get the book right before you act. Police will give you a ticket if you violate the traffic rules, your claim that you did not know does not release you from the mistake you made.

Quran is a book of guidance to find peace within and peace with others, if you dont get that right, go back and read it. God cannot be wrong; it is your understanding that is wrong. By the way no one owns God, he, she or it is not any one's property either.

There is a simple test to determine the authenticity of the translation (or your understanding of it); and that is, God is not a villain of his own creation. Quran respects all creation, and respects all traditions and calls for accountability, justice and mercy to build a cohesive society where no one has to live in fear of the other.

The second test is based on the individual, the more an individual interacts with people of different faiths, the greater the understanding of Islam he or she would have, indeed Prophet Muhammad grew up in such an environment and he was pluralistic to the core like Jesus and all the great spiritual masters of the world. He respected the otherness of of the others and it is summarized in this video:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b7Tyt7raIXM

Religion is not about arrogant claims that you have a superior product. Arrogance creates conflicts with others right off the bat.  No matter what religion it is, it teaches humility that builds bridges and harmony between different people.

Take a look at Safis translation, it's available at Amazon, The Quran with references to the Bible by Safi Kaskas and David Hungerford. You owe it to yourselves to find the truth.

Safi is an interfaith activist and he clearly grasps the essence of Quran, that is to create cohesive societies. He passes in both the tests I have mentioned earlier. I have promised him to read his translation write a review, and I shall soon do that, after I complete my book, "the Mistakes Muslims have made".
