Obama Throws Christian Refugees to Lions

The anti-Constantine's support for Muslim genocide against Christians is undeniable.

by Raymond Ibrahim, Gatestone Institute  September 25, 2015

Members of Californias Iraqi Christian community and their supporters protest the months-long detention of Iraqi Christian asylum-seekers at the Otay Mesa detention center.

The fate of those Iraqi Christians who had fled from the Islamic State only to be incarcerated in the United States has finally been decided by the Obama administration: they are to be thrown back to the lions, where they will likely be persecuted if not slaughtered like so many Iraqi Christians before them.

Fifteen of the 27 Iraqi Christians that have been held at a detention center in Otay Mesa, California, for approximately six months, are set to be deported in the coming weeks. Some have already been deported and others are being charged with immigration fraud.

Many of the Iraqi Christian community in San Diegoincluding U.S. citizen family members vouching for the refugeeshad hopes that they would eventually be released.  Mark Arabo, a spokesman for the Chaldean community, had argued that Theyve escaped hell [IS]. Lets allow them to reunite with their families.  One of the detained women had begged to see her ailing mother before she died.  The mother died before they could reunite, and now the daughter is to be deported, possibly back to the hell of the Islamic State.

Why are Christian minorities, who are the most to suffer from the chaos engulfing the Middle East, the least wanted in the United States?

The answer is that the Obama administration defines refugees as people persecuted by their government.  In other words, the only real refugees are those made so due to the actions of Bashar Assad.  As for those who are being raped, slaughtered, and enslaved based on their religious identity by so-called rebel forces fighting Assadincluding the Islamic Statetheir status as refugees is evidently considered dubious at best.

As Abraham H. Miller argues in No room in America for Christian refugees:  What difference does it make which army imperils the lives of innocent Christians?  Christians are still be[ing] slaughtered for being Christian, and their government is incapable of protecting them. Does some group have to come alongas Jewish groups did during the Holocaustand sardonically guarantee that these are real human beings?

In fact, from the start of Western meddling in the Mideast in the context of the Arab Spring, Christians were demonized for being supportive of secular strongmen like Assad.   In a June 4, 2012 article discussing the turmoil in Egypt and Syria, the Independents Robert Fisk scoffed at how the Egyptian presidential candidate Ahmed Shafiq, the Mubarak loyalist, [and rival to the Muslim Brotherhoods Morsi] has the support of the Christian Copts, and Assad has the support of the Syrian Christians. The Christians support the dictators. Not much of a line, is it?

More than three years later, the Western-supported Arab Spring proved an abysmal failure and the same Christian minorities that Fisk took to task were, as expected, persecuted in ways unprecedented in the modern era.

Even without defining refugees as people persecuted by their government, the Obama administration never seems to miss an opportunity to display its bias for Muslims against Christians.  The U.S. State Dept. is in the habit of inviting scores of Muslim representatives but denying visas to solitary Christian representatives.  While habitually ignoring the slaughter of Nigerian Christians at the hands of Boko Haram, the administration called for the human rights of the jihadi murderers.  And when persecuted Copts planned on joining the anti-Muslim Brotherhood revolution, Obama said no.  Then there is the fact that every Arab nation the Obama administration has meddled inespecially Libya and Syriahas seen a dramatic nosedive in the human rights of Christian minorities.

The Obama administrations bias is evident even regarding to the Iraqi Christians illegal crossing of the U.S.-Mexico border, the occasion on which they were arrested. WND correctly observes: At the same time the Obama administration [is] deporting Christians, it has over the years allowed in hundreds of Muslim migrants from Africa and the Middle East who crossed the Southern border the same way the Chaldeans did.

Meanwhile, as the Obama administration nitpicks at the definition of refugee and uses it against severely persecuted Christian minorities, it turns out that four out of five migrantsor 80 percentare not even from Syria.

And while Christian minorities pose little threat to the United Statesindeed, they actually bring benefits to U.S. securityMuslims all around the U.S. are supporting the Islamic State and Muslim clerics are relying on the refugee influx to conquer Western nations, in the Islamic tradition of Hijra, or jihad by emigration.

As Koran 4:100 puts it: And whoever emigrates for the cause of Allah will find on the earth many locations and abundance. And whoever leaves his home as an emigrant to Allah and His Messenger and then death overtakes himhis reward has already become incumbent upon Allah.

In Islamic usage, the cause of Allah is synonymous with jihad to empower and enforce Allahs laws on earth, or Sharia.  In this context, immigrating into Western lands is a win-win for Muslims: if they die in the process somehow, paradise is theirs; if they dont, the locations and abundance of the West are theirs.

All the while, true Christian refugees, fleeing the same hostile Muslim forces being allowed to enter Europe and America by the thousands, are thrown back to the lions by the Obama administration.

Wake Up!: Muslim Persecution of Christians, July 2015

During celebrations of St Peter and St Paul, the Iraqi priest Fr Douglas Bazi further reflected that We cannot celebrate the feast of two martyrs without remembering the living martyrs of our time.

by Raymond Ibrahim, Gatestone Institute September 21, 2015

Not only is the Islamic State (IS) persecuting Christians but so are the U.S.-supported rebel forces, which the Obama administration assures are moderate.  According to a recent NPR report, With backing from U.S. allies, like Turkey and Saudi Arabia, this [U.S. supported] rebel coalition fights both the Syrian regime and the so-called Islamic State, or ISIS. But the coalition has extremists in its own ranks who have mistreated Christians and forced them out of their homesjust as IS has done.

In response, Mideast Christian leaders made clear that, far from expecting the West to intervene on their behalf, they merely wish that the West stops arming, supporting, or simply facilitating the Islamic terrorists making their lives a living hellas plainly spelled out in a Christian Today article titled, Syrian Christian leader tells West: Stop arming terror groups who are massacring our people.

According to the Patriarch of Antioch, Moran Mor Ignatius Aphrem II, If the West wants to do something about the present crisis, the most effective thing would be to support local governments, which need sufficient armies and forces to maintain security and defend respective populations against attacks.  State institutions need to be strengthened and stabilized. Instead, what we see is their forced dismemberment being fueled from the outside.

Another Christian leader had another message to the West.  According to Iraqi priest Fr Douglas Bazi, once a torture victim who takes care of thousands of refugees forced to flee Mosul since the Islamic State took over the city last year, the West needs to Wake up!  During celebrations of St Peter and St Paul, the Iraqi priest further reflected that We cannot celebrate the feast of two martyrs without remembering the living martyrs of our time.

Nor are these martyrs limited to the Middle East.  Among the many Christians slaughtered in Nigeria in July was a young girl who was stoned to death for refusing to renounce Christ and convert to Islam.  Pastor Mark lost his daughter, Monica, in the Chibok abduction which involved almost 300 predominantly Christian girls kidnapped at the hands of the Islamic organization, Boko Haram.  He was told that his daughter refused to change her religion, and so was buried from the neck on down and then stoned to death.

The rest of Julys roundup of Muslim persecution of Christians around the world includes, but is not limited to, the following accounts, listed by theme.

Muslim Attacks on Christian Churches

Nigeria: Dozens of Christian churches were attacked in the Muslim-majority northern regions of the nation, where Boko Haram is headquartered:
  • On Sunday, July 12, explosives planted at a church in Jos went off but there were no casualties as the bomb was detected by the churchs security personnel.
  • In response to a mosque explosion that killed 20 peoplepart of Boko Harams Ramadan killing spreerioting Muslims burned down two churches on July 6 in Jos.  According to the report, the mosque attack has revived historic tensions between members of both faiths in Jos.  Christians in Nigeria now not only fear Boko Haram, but also attacks from their Muslim neighbors.

Iraq:  The Islamic state blew up another Christian church under its authority, the Mother of Aid Church which had stood in central Mosul for thousands of years.  The blast also killed four children who were near the church at the time.  IS also transformed the St. Joseph Church, an ancient Chaldean church in Mosul, into a mosque.  Pictures of St. Joseph show that the dome has been painted black and the church has been stripped of all crosses and Christian symbols and images.

Egypt: Three church related attacks occurred:

  • The Fathers Church in eastern Alexandria was attacked on July 21 by unknown assailants who hurled Molotov cocktails and other homemade bombs at the church. No one was injured, although the facade of the church was damaged from the attack.  Security discovered a bag with more firebombs on the scene from where the assailants fled. According to El Watan, the incident created a state of panic in the area, especially because the Fathers Church is considered the most important church for the Coptic Catholics of the region.
  • Muslims suspended prayer in a church in the village of Arab Asnabt in Abu Qurqas, Minya, and called for demolishing it in an effort to prevent Coptic Christians from practicing their religious rites.
  • Dozens of incensed Muslims congregated before the house of a Christian on the accusation that he was trying to use his home as a church.  Security arrived in time to disperse angry Muslims.  Coptic Christians trying toor merely being accused ofturning their homes into churches in Egypt is not an uncommon occurrence and ultimately reflects the difficulties Christians face in building or even renovating their existing churches, all in accordance with Islamic law.

Niger: Approximately 70 Christian churches and an orphanage continue facing a lack of resources and difficult conditions in rebuilding six months after thousands of Muslims attacked and destroyed them in revenge for the offensive Muhammad cartoons published by the satirical magazine, Charlie Hebdoa secular magazine based in France that also habitually mocks Christianity.  Since these incidents, it is as if life had stopped, said Baptist pastor Jacques Kangind.  Discussing when he entered his destroyed churchhis home was also destroyed during the riotsthe pastor said: I felt very bad, such an indescribable feeling when I saw my ripped-up Bible on the ground. For a pastor, it was like my entire life was torn apart. I could not stop shedding tears.

Muslim Violence and Slaughter of Christians

Nigeria: Boko Haram jihadis shot and killed 29 people in two Christian enclaves of northeast Nigeria.  Most people in Dille village ran but those who could not were gunned down and many homes were set ablaze.  Separately,  a woman suicide bomber blew herself up at a busy market in northeastern Damaturu town, killing 15 people and wounding 50.  And in Maikadiri village, at least 14 people were killed and 500 cows were slaughtered.

Iraq:  Christians kidnapped and held for ransom continue to be slaughtered even after their ransom is paid.   The body of Quais Abdul Shaya was returned to his familyafter they had paid the demanded ransom of $25,000 USD. Saher Hanna, who worked at the Ministry of the Interior, was also killed after his Islamic abductors received his ransom.  Killing Christian hostages, including children, after receiving payment is not limited to the Islamic State and occurs in other Muslim nations such as Egypt.

Libya: Unconfirmed reports, including from the Libyan Herald, say that the Islamic State executed another Egyptian Coptic Christian they had seized.  Bekhit Nageh Efrank Ebeid, a 25-year-old laborer, was kidnapped along with two other Christians, Kofi Frimpong Sekyere from Ghana and Ibrahim Adeola from Nigeria.

Egypt: An unknown man attacked a Coptic nun in the Muslim-majority nation.  According to Fr. Abdel Quddus, An unknown person stalked a sister in the diocese of Fashn, Beni Suef, and attacked her last week with a bladed weapon while she was outside her residence. He then hit her head against the wall and fled.   And Wadie Ramses, a Christian who was kidnapped and held for 92 days by Islamic militants in the Sinai desert, managed to escape.  During his time in captivity he was blindfolded and handcuffed, beaten and abused.  According to his account, the most terrifying moments came when he would overhear his Muslim kidnappers debating whether to behead the Christian doctor or keep him alive to ensure a ransom.  The police, though given many opportunities, never put forth the effort to rescue him, said the Copt.

Apostasy, Blasphemy, and Proselytism

Uganda: Muslims once again tried to kill a Muslim convert to Christianity.  Last year, Hassan Muwanguzi, a former Muslim Sheikh and now born-again Christian, survived a poisoning attempts by Muslim relatives, but lost his twelve-year old daughter in a separate attack.  Most recently, Muslims broke into his house with knives and clubs in another attempt to assassinate the apostate.  Muwanguzi was at a prayer meeting at the time, but the foiled assailants stole thousands of dollars worth of his possessions.  Despite the fact that Uganda is a majority-Christian nation, Muwanguzi lives in a majority-Muslim region, and faces regular death threats (read more about his travails here).

Pakistan: Muslims again used the blasphemy accusation to persecute Christian minorities:
  • Two Christian women and the husband of one of the women in the Punjab were tortured by Muslim villagers.  Afterwards, they painted the womens and mans faces black, put shoes around their necks as garlandsshoes are deemed ultra-degrading symbols in Pakistanand paraded them around the town on donkeys, while the Muslim mob continued to taunt and beat them.  The two women, identified as Rukhsana and Rehana, were accused of committing blasphemy after they got into an argument with a Muslim woman who wanted to buy a carpet for a low price, to which the Christians refused. The Muslim woman then accused the Christians of committing blasphemy by saying that the carpet had images of Holy Books and Koran verses on it, which prompted the mob to drag the Christians out of their homes and beat them.
  • Two Christian brothers, Qaisar and Amoon Ayub of Lahore, were arrested on blasphemy charges after one of them was accused of posting material offensive to Islam on his website.  According to Qaisar, he closed his account in 2009 but one of his Muslim colleagues, Shahryar Gill, somehow managed to restore the website, while ownership remained in Qaisars name.  Apparently in revenge for some office quarrel, the Muslim framed the Christian, reported the blasphemy to the authorities, prompting the two brothers to flee Pakistan.  Years later, thinking things had cooled down, they tried to return to their wives and children, only to be arrested.

Sudan: Two imprisoned Presbyterian pastors are on trial and facing a possible death sentence. Rev. Yat Michael and the Rev. Peter Yen Reith of the South Sudan Presbyterian Evangelical Church are being charged with espionage and blasphemy under the Republic of Sudans Islamic laws.  Other church leaders say that Christians are often targeted for their faith and that the governments accusations are pretexts: This is not something new for our church.  Almost all pastors have gone to jail under the government of Sudan. We have been stoned and beaten. This is their habit to pull down the church. We are not surprised. This is the way they deal with the church, said  Rev. Tut Kony.

Egypt: Three young Christians were arrested in Alexandria on charges of contempt for Islam. The previous evening, the Christians were seen handing out bags of dates to Ramadan fasting Muslims.  Some Muslims reported them to authorities, saying that the pamphlets contained the teachings of Christ were found in the bags of dates.  They were all arrested and charged with contempt for Islam.  The three Christian youth pled that the pamphlets were for their own personal use and not meant to be placed in the bags of dates.  They were ordered to pay 10,000 Egyptian pounds and released.

Dhimmitude: Generic Muslim Abuse of Christians

Pakistan: Christian girls continued to be abducted and raped in the Muslim majority nation.  A new report indicates that 1,000 non-Muslim girls are abducted, raped, forced to convert to Islam and/or marry their abductors every year.  Cases reported in July include:
  • Tarfa Younis, a 12-year- old Christian orphan girl, was sold to a 55-year-old Muslim man who repeatedly raped her for over a year; the mans nephew also abused her.  The traumatized girl managed to run away and reach the home of an uncle.  According to The Voice, a human rights organization involved in the case, the practice of raping and forcing Christian girls into marriage continues in Punjab, especially in suburban areas.
  • Fouzia, a 25-year-old married Christian woman and mother of three children, was abducted on July 23 by Muhammad Nazir, another 55-year-old Muslim man. He forced her to convert to Islam and become his wife.   Her family asked Muhammad for her return, but he insisted that she voluntarily converted and married himand that if they made any trouble there would be serious consequences.  According to human rights lawyer Sardar Mushtaq Gill:
Usually episodes like this proceed in the following manner: the family of the victim presents a complaint. The abductor lodges a counter-complaint affirming that the woman made a voluntary decision. In most cases the victims are minors, young adolescent girls. They suffer sexual violence, forced prostitution, domestic abuse and even sold to human traffickers.

Gill concluded that it is rare for such cases to end with the return of the girls to their original families.

Indonesia: A group of Muslims attacked and disrupted a Christian scout camp that had brought together thousands of young people and was organized by a Protestant group in Yogyakarta, central Java. The Muslim assailants argued that the Christian group was not authorized to organize any public activityespecially since it was Ramadan and public activities that violate the Islamic nature of the month are forbidden. On the second day of the event, local Muslims stormed the site and brought everything to a halt.  As a result of the raid, thousands of Christian participants from around the country were forced to leave the area.  According to the Christian camp manager, organizers said they had official permission [to hold the event], but suddenly scores of radical Muslims arrived ordering everyone to clear off. Commenting on the expulsion of Christians, Muhammad Fuad, head of the local branch of the Islamic Community Forum,  expressed satisfaction that the Christian event was shut down:  It is good because everyone should understand how to behave towards the Muslim community.[i]

Iraq: The Islamic State issued a call to its members at the University of Mosul to burn all books written by Christianswhether researchers, writers, or academicsthat are found in the Central Library at the University of Mosul.

About this Series

The persecution of Christians in the Islamic world has become endemic.  Accordingly, Muslim Persecution of Christians was developed to collate someby no means allof the instances of persecution that surface each month. It serves two purposes:

1)          To document that which the mainstream media does not: the habitual, if not chronic, persecution of Christians.

2)          To show that such persecution is not random, but systematic and interrelatedthat it is rooted in a worldview inspired by Islamic Sharia.

Accordingly, whatever the anecdote of persecution, it typically fits under a specific theme, including hatred for churches and other Christian symbols; apostasy, blasphemy, and proselytism laws that criminalize and sometimes punish with death those who offend Islam; sexual abuse of Christian women; forced conversions to Islam;  theft and plunder in lieu of jizya (financial tribute expected from non-Muslims); overall expectations for Christians to behave like cowed dhimmis, or third-class, tolerated citizens; and simple violence and murder. Sometimes it is a combination thereof.

Because these accounts of persecution span different ethnicities, languages, and localesfrom Morocco in the West, to Indonesia in the Eastit should be clear that one thing alone binds them: Islamwhether the strict application of Islamic Sharia law, or the supremacist culture born of it.

_____

[i]  According to Asia News:

Indonesia, the worlds most populous Muslim nation, has often been the scene of attacks or acts of intolerance towards minorities, whether Christians, Ahmadi Muslims or people of other faiths.
In Aceh, Islamic law (Sharia) is enforced, the only Indonesian province to do so. This is the result of a peace agreement between the central government and the Free Aceh Movement (GAM).

However, more radical and extreme versions of Islam are growing in many other parts of the country, like Bekasi and Bogor, in West Java.

In addition, legal loopholes have been used to prevent Christians from building their places of worship, like the case involving the Yasmin Church in West Java.

Indonesias constitution recognizes religious freedom, but Christian communities, Catholics included (3 per cent of the population) have been the victims of religious violence and persecution.

Why Western Nations Should Only Accept Christian Refugees

Raymond Ibrahim makes a compelling case as to why Western nations should only accept Christian refugees, keying on four main reasons:
  • Christians are true victims of persecution;
  • Muslim persecution of Christians has been further enabled by Western policies;
  • Unlike Muslims, or even Yazidis, Christians are easily assimilated in Western countries, due to the shared Christian heritage;
  • Mideast Christians bring trustworthy language and cultural skills that are beneficial to the West.

Why Western Nations Should Only Accept Christian Refugees
by Raymond Ibrahim  September 16, 2015

As refugees from the Middle East flood the West, a number of countriesincluding Hungary, Bulgaria, Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Cyprus, and Australiaare defying political correctness by wanting to accept Christian refugees only.

While more progressive voices cry racism, the fact remains: there are several objective reasons why the West should give priority, if not exclusivity, to Christian refugeesand some of these are actually to the benefit of European host nations.

Consider:

Christians are true victims of persecution.

From a humanitarian point of viewand humanitarianism is the chief reason being cited in accepting refugeesChristians should receive top priority simply because they are the most persecuted group in the Middle Eastwell before the Islamic State phenomenon came into being.  As Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop put it, I think that Christian minorities are being persecuted in Syria and even if the conflict were over they would still be persecuted.

Indeed.  While they are especially targeted by the Islamic State, before the new caliphate was established, Christians were and continue to be targeted by MuslimsMuslim mobs, Muslim individuals, Muslim regimes, and Muslim terrorists, from Muslim countries of all races (Arab, African, Asian, etc.)and for the same reason: Christians are infidel number one.  See Crucified Again: Exposing Islams New War on Christians for hundreds of anecdotes before the rise of ISIS as well as the Muslim doctrines that create such hate and contempt for Christians.

Conversely, Muslim refugeesas opposed to the many ISIS and other jihadi infiltrators posing as refugeesare not fleeing direct persecution, but chaos created by the violent and supremacist teachings of their own religion, Islam.  Its not for nothing that Samuel Huntington famously pointed out that Islams borders are bloody, and so are its innards.  This means that when Muslims enter Western nations, chaos, persecution, and mayhem follow.  Take a look at those West European citiesfor example, Londonistanthat already have a large Muslim population for an idea.

Muslim persecution of Christians has been further enabled by Western policies, especially those of the Obama administration.

In other words, Western nations should accept Christian refugees on the basis that Western meddling in the Middle East is directly responsible for exacerbating the plight of Christian minorities.  After all, Christians did not flee from Bashar Assads Syria, or Saddam Husseins Iraq, or Muamar Gaddafis Libya.  Their systematic persecution began in earnest after the U.S. and others interfered in those nations in the name of democracy.  All they did is unleash the jihadi forces that the dictators had long kept suppressed. Now the Islamic State is deeply embedded in all three nations, enslaving, raping, and slaughtering countless Christian infidels and other minorities.

Vladimir Putins thoughts on the refugee crisis are plainly true:

This is a crisis which was absolutely expected.  We in Russia and your humble servant said several years ago that there would be massive problems if our so-called western partners conduct what I have always called the wrong foreign policy, especially in regions of the Muslim World, the Middle East and north Africa, which they continue practically to this day.

The Russian leader correctly adds that people are running away not from the regime of Bashar Assad, but from Islamic State, which seized large areas in Syria and Iraq, and are committing atrocities there. That is what they are escaping from.

Thus if the West is responsible for unleashing the full-blown jihad on Christians, surely it is the latter that the West should prioritize, from a humanitarian point of view.

Unlike Muslims, or even Yazidis, Christians are easily assimilated in Western countries, due to the shared Christian heritage.

As Slovakia, which prefers Christian refugees, correctly points out, Muslims would not fit in, including because there are no mosques in the Slavic nation. Conversely, Slovakia as a Christian country can really help Christians from Syria to find a new home in Slovakia, said an interior minister.

This too is common sense.  The same Christian teachings that molded Europe over the centuries are the same ones that mold Middle Eastern Christianswhether Orthodox, Catholic, or Protestant.   As San Diegos Father Noel said in the context of the Iraqi Christian refugees who managed to flee ISIS but are now rotting in a U.S. detention center, Mideast Christians who come here [America] want to be good citizens and many who came here a decade ago are now lawyers, teachers, or other productive members of society.

Meanwhile, Muslims follow a completely different blueprint, the Koranwhich condemns Christians by name, calls for constant war (jihad) against all non-Muslims, and advocates any number of distinctly anti-Western practices.   Hence it is no surprise that many Muslim asylum seekers are anti-Western at heart, if not members of jihadi organizations.

Mideast Christians bring trustworthy language and cultural skills that are beneficial to the West.

They understand the Middle Easternincluding Islamicmindset and can help the West understand it.

Moreover, unlike Muslims, Christians have no conflicting loyalty issues: Islamic law forbids Muslims from aiding infidels against fellow Muslims (click here to see some of the treachery this leads to in the U.S. and here to see the treachery Christians have suffered from their longtime Muslim neighbors and friends).  Indeed, an entire book about how double agent Muslims have infiltrated every corner of the U.S. government exists.  No such threat exists among Mideast Christians.  They too render unto God what is Gods and unto Caesar what is Caesars.

Finally, it goes without saying that Mideast Christians have no sympathy for the very people and ideology that made their lives a living hellthe very people and ideology that are also hostile to everything in the West.  Thus a win-win: the West and Mideast Christians complement each other, if only in that they share the same foe.

All the above reasonsfrom those that offer humanitarian relief to the true victims of persecution, to those that offer benefits to the Westare unassailable in their logic and wisdom.  Yet, because Western progressives prioritize politically correct ideals and fantasies over stark reality, there is little chance that they will be considered.

The reason for this is simple: for the progressive mindsetwhich dominates Western governments, media, and academiataking in refugees has little to do with altruism and everything to do egoism: It matters little who is really being persecutedas seen, the West is directly responsible for greatly exacerbating the sufferings of Christians.

No, whats important is that we feel good about ourselves.  By taking in foreign Muslims, as opposed to siding with familiar Christians, progressives get to feel enlightened, open-minded, tolerant, and multiculturaland thats all that matters here.

Meanwhile, reality quietly marches on: The same Islamic mentality that slaughters infidel Christians in the Middle East is now welcomed into the West with open arms.

How the Islamic World was Forged: An Exercise in Common Sense

"That there are still millions of Christians in Egypt (approximately 10% of the population)is not proof of Islams tolerance but rather its intolerance."

by Raymond Ibrahim, FrontPage Magazine August 31, 2015

What made non-Muslims convert to Islam, leading to the creation of the Islamic world?

Early historical sourcesboth Muslim and non-Muslimmake clear that the Islamic empire was forged by the sword; that people embraced Islam, not so much out of sincere faith, but for a myriad of reasonsfrom converting in order to enjoy the boons of being on the winning team to converting in order to evade the dooms of being on the losing team.

Modern day Muslims and other apologistsprimarily in academia, government, and mainstream mediareject this idea.  They argue that the non-Muslims who embraced Islam did so from sheer conviction; that the ancestors of todays 1.5 billion Muslims all converted to Islam due to its intrinsic appeal; that the modern day coercion and persecution committed by the Islamic State and other organizations is an aberration.

Of course, as mentioned, the primary texts of history are full of anecdotes demonstrating the opposite.  However, because ours is an increasingly ahistorical society, in this essay I endeavor to show that sheer common sense alone validates what history records, namely, that the Islamic world and its populace was forged through violent coercion.

To do so, I will use Egyptone of the most important Muslim majority nations and my ancestral homelandas a paradigm.  I will show how a historic fact that Islams apologists habitually boast ofthat there are still millions of Christians in Egypt (approximately 10% of the population)is not proof of Islams tolerance but rather its intolerance.

In the 7th century, when Islam was being formulated, Egypt had been Christian for centuries,[1] before most of Europe had converted.  Alexandria was one of the most important ecclesiastical centers of ancient Christian learning and, along with Rome and Antioch, one of the original three sees.[2]  Much literary and ongoing archaeological evidence attest to the fact that Christianity permeated the whole of Egypt.

Writing around the year 400roughly two-and-a-half centuries before the Arab invasionJohn Cassian, a Christian monk from the region of modern day Romania, observed that

the traveler from Alexandria in the north to Luxor in the south would have in his ears along the whole journey, the sounds of prayers and hymns of the monks, scattered in the desert, from the monasteries and from the caves, from monks, hermits, and anchorites.[3]

And in recent times, both the oldest parchment to contain words from the Gospel (dating to the 1st century) and the oldest image of Christ were discovered in separate regions of Egypt.

Possibly oldest known image of Christ, found in Egypt and dating to the 1st century

The question now becomes: what made such an ancient and heavily Christian nation become Islamic?  More specifically, what made the ancestors of todays Egyptian Muslimsmost of who were Coptic Christiansconvert to Islam?

For an objective answer to this question, a completely overlooked factor must be considered.

In the 7th century, when Muslim Arabs overran Egypt, and on into the medieval era, religion was not something to be casually adhered to or changed as it is today in the West.  People of that era were true believers; there was no alternative narrativeno so-called science vs God claims.
Whatever religion a person was born into was accepted with absolute convictiondespite the many movies that project modernity onto Medieval Christians. (Thus the focal character of Kingdom of Heaven, Balian, and all other Christian protagonists reject the fanatical Christians and exhibit a more open, tolerant, and nuanced view on religion, including Islam.  Such depictions are anachronisms with little grounding in history.)

In Medieval Europe, the truths of Christianity were etched into the minds of all, from youth on up.  There was no doubtbecause there was no alternative.  As historian of Medieval Europe and the Crusades Thomas Madden puts it:

[T]he medieval world was not the modern world. For medieval people, religion was not something one just did at church. It was their science, their philosophy, their politics, their identity, and their hope for salvation. It was not a personal preference but an abiding and universal truth.

In this context, to apostatize, to leave the Christian faith, especially for another creed, was the most unthinkable of all transgressions against ones own soula sin that would lead to eternal damnation.

God wills it! Typical depictions of hypocritical
crusaders in Kingdom of Heaven
It was of course the same with Muslims.  The point here is that pre-modern man took the religion of his people, his tribe, his world, very seriouslyespecially when such religions taught that failure to do so, or worse, to willingly apostatize, would lead to eternal hell.

Put differently, even if Islam offered intrinsic appeal, the idea that pre-modern Christians were free to choose to convertfree of guilt, free of fear, free of existential traumais anachronistic and thus implausible.

Again, Western man, who lives in an era when people change religions as often as they change shoes, may have great difficulty in fully appreciating this idea.   But it is true nonetheless.

After writing that Christians saw crusades to the east as acts of love and charity, waged against Muslim conquerors in defense of Christian people and their lands, Madden correctly observes:

It is easy enough for modern people to dismiss the crusades as morally repugnant or cynically evil.  Such judgements, however, tell us more about the observer than the observed.  They are based on uniquely modern (and, therefore, Western) values.  If, from the safety of our modern world, we are quick to condemn the medieval crusader, we should be mindful that he would be just as quick to condemn us [regarding our values and priorities].  In both societies, the medieval and the modern, people fight for what is most dear to them.[4]

If Europeans were this dedicated to Christianity in the medieval era, what of the Copts of Egypt who were Christian many centuries earlier?  Indeed, according to some historical sources, Egypts ancient Christians may have been especially tenacious in their zeal.

What, then, made them convert to Islam in mass is the question before us?

Is it plausible to believe that the primitive Muslim conquerors of Egypt did not discriminate against its indigenous Christians or pressure them to convert to Islam (even as Muslims do so now in the enlightened modern era)?

Is it true, to quote Georgetown University professor John Esposito, that Christians were free to practice their faith to worship and be governed by their religious leaders and laws in such areas as marriage, divorce, and inheritance. In exchange, they were required to pay tribute, a poll tax (jizya) that entitled them to Muslim protection from outside aggression and exempted them from military service. (Rebuttal to this assertion here.)

A "subdued and humiliated" dhimmi pays the jizya. Note all the Muslims are armed,
with an axe right in front of the pasha. The threat is clear.

And yet, though left in peace and unpressured, Egypts original Christians found the new creed of sword-swinging, camel-riding  Arabs so intrinsically appealing that they willingly apostatized in mass from the religion of their forefathersa religion that was so fundamental to their being, albeit in a way modern man cannot comprehend?

In fact, common sense suggests that nothing less than extremely severe circumstances and hardshipspersecutionprompted the Copts to convert to Islam.

Of course, for the historian who reads the primary sourcesas opposed to the mainstream works of fiction being peddled as history by the likes of Karen Armstrong and othersthe above exercise in common sense is superfluous.

For the primary sources make clear that, while Egypts Copts acquiesced to dhimmi statusconstantly paying large sums of extortion money and accepting life as third class subjects with few rights simply to remain Christianbouts of extreme persecution regularly flared up.  And with each one, more and more Christians converted to Islam in order to find relief.[5]

One telling example: in Muslim historian Taqi al-Din al-Maqrizis (d. 1442) authoritative history of Egypt, anecdote after anecdote is recorded of Muslims burning churches, slaughtering Christians, and enslaving their women and children.  The only escape thenas it is increasingly todaywas for Christians to convert to Islam.

After recording one particularly egregious bout of persecution, where countless Christians were slaughtered, enslaved, and raped, and where reportedly some 30,000 churches in Egypt and Syria were destroyeda staggering number that further indicates how Christian the Near East was before Islamthe pious Muslim historian makes clear why Christians converted: Under these circumstances a great many Christians became Muslims (emphasis added).[6]

Alongside these times of extreme persecution, the entrenched dhimmi system saw the increasingly impoverished Egyptian people slowly convert to Islam over the centuries, so that today only 10% remain Christian.

Consider the words of Alfred Butler, a 19th century historian writing before political correctness came to dominate academia.  In The Arab Conquest of Egypt, he highlights the vicious system of bribing the Christians into conversion:

[A]lthough religious freedom was in theory secured for the Copts under the capitulation, it soon proved in fact to be shadowy and illusory. For a religious freedom which became identified with social bondage and with financial bondage could have neither substance nor vitality.  As Islam spread, the social pressure upon the Copts became enormous, while the financial pressure at least seemed harder to resist, as the number of Christians or Jews who were liable for the poll-tax [jizya] diminished year by year, and their isolation became more conspicuous. . . . [T]he burdens of the Christians grew heavier in proportion as their numbers lessened [that is, the more Christians converted to Islam, the more the burdens on the remaining few grew]. The wonder, therefore, is not that so many Copts yielded to the current which bore them with sweeping force over to Islam, but that so great a multitude of Christians stood firmly against the stream, nor have all the storms of thirteen centuries moved their faith from the rock of its foundation.[7]

The reader will bear in mind that although the above exposition concerns Egypt, the same paradigm applies to the rest of conquered Christian lands.  Today the whole of North Africa is reportedly 99% Muslimyet few are aware that it was Christian majority in the 7th century when Islam invaded.  St. Augustinearguably the father of Western Christian theologyhailed from modern day Algeria.

Thus it is not an exaggeration to say that the Islamic world would be a fraction of its size, or might not exist at all, were it not for the fact that non-Muslims converted to Islam simply to evade oppression and persecution.  Once all these Christians converted to Islam, all their progeny became Muslim in perpetuity, thanks to Islams apostasy law, which bans Muslims from leaving Islam on pain of death.  Indeed, according to Dr. Yusuf al-Qaradawi, a leading cleric in the Muslim world, If the [death] penalty for apostasy was ignored, there would not be an Islam today; Islam would have ended on the death of the prophet.

Bloodied gate of Coptic Christian church in Egypt,
one of many dozens to be attacked in recent years.
Which leads to one of Islams most bitterest of ironies: a great many of todays Christians, especially those in the Arab world, are being persecuted by Muslims whose own ancestors were persecuted Christians who converted to Islam to end their own suffering. In other words, Muslim descendants of persecuted Christians are today persecuting their Christian cousinsand thus perpetuating the cycle that made them Muslim in the first the place.

The long and short of all this is simple: Past and present, Islam has been a religion of coercion.[8]   More than half of the territory that once made up Christendomincluding Egypt, Syria, Turkey, North Africaconverted to Islam due to bouts of extreme violence and ongoing financial bleeding.  The Islamic State and like organizations and Muslims around the world are not aberrations but continuations.  The violence, intolerance and coercion they exhibitpressuring Christians to convert to Islam, compelling Muslims to remain in Islamcreated and sustains what is today called the Islamic world.

Not only do we have a plethora of original source material proving these conclusions, but sheer common sense demonstrates as much.

One of the major themes throughout Butlers bookwhich, first published in 1902, is heavily based on primary sources, Arabic and Coptic, unlike more modern secondary works that promote the Islamic liberator thesisis that there is not a word to show that any section of the Egyptian nation viewed the advent of the Muslims with any other feeling than terror (p. 236):
Even in the most recent historians it will be found that the outline of the story [of the 7th century conquest of Egypt] is something as follows: . that the Copts generally hailed them [Muslims] as deliverers and rendered them every assistance; and that Alexandria after a long siege, full of romantic episodes, was captured by storm.  Such is the received account.  It may seem presumptuous to say that it is untrue from beginning to end, but to me no other conclusion is possible. [pgs. iv-v]

Butler and other politically incorrect historians were and are aware of the savage and atrocity-laden nature of the Islamic conquests.  The Coptic chronicler, John of Nikiu, a contemporary of the Arab conquest of Egypt and possibly an eyewitness, wrote:

Then the Muslims arrived in Nikiu [along the Nile] seized the town and slaughtered everyone they met in the street and in the churchesmen, women, and children, sparing nobody.  Then they went to other places, pillaged and killed all the inhabitants they found.  But let us say no more, for it is impossible to describe the horrors the Muslims committed

Not, of course, that the average Muslim is aware of this fact. Indeed, in 2011 the Egyptian Muslim scholar Fadel Soliman published a book that was well received and widely promoted in the Islamic world, including by Al Jazeera, entitled Copts: Muslims Before Muhammad.  The book makes the ahistorical and anachronisticin a word, the absurdargument that Egypts 7th century Christians were really prototypical Muslims and that that is why Arabias Muslims came to liberate them from oppressive Christian rule.

The New Dark Age: U.S. and West Victimize Christians Fleeing ISIS

The "Christian" West reveals its hatred of Christianity by openly persecuting Eastern Christian refugees and aiding those who murder and terrorize them. We have entered a new Dark Age in all but name. We are living in the Age of Tribulation.

U.S. and West Victimize Christians Fleeing ISIS
by Raymond Ibrahim, Gatestone Institute, September 6, 2015

Iraqi Christians demonstrate by the Otay Detention Facility, San Diego, California

According to a recent NPR report, the U.S. supported moderate coalition fighting both Bashar Assad and the Islamic State in Syria has extremists in its own ranks who have mistreated Christians and forced them out of their homesjust as IS has done.

Christian minorities forced out of their homes who manage to reach Western nationsincluding the United Statessometimes encounter more trouble.

Despite having family members to sponsor them, a group of 20 Christians who fled the Islamic State in Iraq have been imprisoned indefinitely at the Otay Detention Facility in San Diego, even though they have local family members and Christian leaders who vouch for them (the primary way that the majority of detained foreign nationals are released is to the supervision of American citizens vouching for them).

Activists say that the men and women in detention have been held indefinitely for too long, including by the U.S. governments own standards. Some have been imprisoned for over seven months with no hearing date set for their release.

Mark Arabo, a spokesman for the Chaldean community in San Diego said they are being held without a real reason. Theyve escaped hell [IS]. Lets allow them to reunite with their families.

The detainees include a woman who pleaded to see her sickly mother.  The mother died before being reunited with her daughter who escaped the clutches of IS.  She had been begging to be let out of the U.S. detention center and see her dying mother, said a priest aware of her case.

Discussing the ongoing plight of these Iraqi Christians,  San Diegos East County Magazine concludes:  Why the federal government has failed to take steps to expedite such reunification in cases where family and religious leaders are willing to vouch for and help those seeking asylum here, then, remains an unfathomable mystery.

Such unfathomable mysteries are reminiscent of the U.S. State Dept.s habit of inviting Muslim representatives but denying visas to Christian representatives. Since the start of 2015, 4,205 Muslims have been admitted into the U.S. from Iraq but only 727 Christians.  For every one Christian the U.S. grants asylum, it grants asylum to five or six Muslimseven though Christians, as persecuted infidel minorities, are in much greater need of sanctuary, not to mention more assimilating to American culture than Muslims.

As Faith McDonnell, director of religious liberty at the Institute on Religion & Democracy, put it:

This [detainment of Iraqi Christians in San Diego] follows the disturbing pattern that we have seen from the State Department of ignoring the particular targeting of Christians by ISIS while giving preferential treatment for asylum to other groups with expedited processinglike Somalis, Iraqis, and Syrians, some of whom could very well be members of jihadist movements.

The same is happening in the United Kingdom.  Church leaders accuse David Cameron of turning his back on Christians facing genocide in Syria and Iraq by failing to grant them refuge in the UKeven though thousands of Muslims have been allowed entry.

Lord Carey, the former Archbishop of Canterbury, signed a petition calling on the UK government to welcome Christian refugees and give them priority as asylum seekers, emphasizing that Syrian and Iraqi Christians are being butchered, tortured and enslaved.

Similarly, Lord Weidenfeld, 95, who fled Nazi-occupied Austria in 1938 with the help of British Quakers, said:

Why is it that the Poles and the Czechs are taking in Christian families and yet the British government stands idly by?
This mood of indifference is reminiscent of the worst phases of appeasement, and may have catastrophic consequences. Europe must awake and the Conservative British Government should be leading from the front.
Most European governments, especially those that are Christian explicitly or implicitly, are failing in their duty to look after their fellow Christians in their hour of need.

This is not necessarily true of central and east European nations.  Along with countries like Poland and Czechoslovakia, Slovakia recently went so far as to say it will only accept Christians when it takes in Syrian refugees under an EU relocation scheme.  The Slavic nation argues that Muslims would not be accepted because they would not feel at home, including because there are no mosques in Slovakia.

Meanwhile, many of those Christians who are granted asylum in Western countries arrive there only to be further persecuted by Muslim asylum seekersdemonstrating, once again, who does and who doesnt deserve asylum; who does and who doesnt assimilate in Western culture.

Most recently in Sweden, two small families of Christian asylum seekers from Syria were harassed and abused by approximately 80 Muslim asylum seekers also from Syria.

The Christians and Muslimsdescribed by one Swedish newspaper as fundamentalist Islamistsresided in the same asylum house.  Among other humiliations, the Muslims ordered the Christians not to wear their crosses around their necks and not to use communal areas when in use by Muslims.

After continuous harassment and threats, the Christian refugees who had managed to escape the Islamic State left the Swedish asylum house fearing for their own safety. A spokesman for the government migration agency responsible for the center they had been staying in said:

They dared not stay. The atmosphere became too intimidating. And they got no help They chose themselves to organize new address and moved away without our participation because they felt a discomfort.

Western nations are not merely ignoring Muslim persecution of Christians in the Middle East, they are actively supporting it by sponsoring moderate rebels who in reality are as radical and anti-Western as the Islamic State. And when these persecuted Christian minorities manage to flee the Islamic State and come to the West for asylum, they are imprisoned again. All the while, Muslimsin the Mideast and in the Westare being empowered and welcomed in the West with open arms.

Raymond Ibrahim: Korans Contents Not Carbon Dating Cast More Doubt on Islam

"A book that calls for everything ungodly but claims to have been written by God is false on principle.  Carbon dating is irrelevant."

by Raymond Ibrahim, FrontPage Magazine, September 3, 2015

"Its not the age of the Koran but its contents" which prove Islam is false.

The media is abuzz with news that a portion of the Koran, which Muslims believe was first recited by their prophet, Muhammad, may actually predate Muhammad himself.  Many seem to think that such news will have a large impact on the Muslim world and make Muslims rethink the veracity of their faith.

Thus Tom Holland, a British historian, asserts, It destabilizes, to put it mildly, the idea that we can know anything with certainty about how the Koran emerged.  And that, in turn, has implications for the historicity of Mohammed and his followers.

A Koranic manuscript consultant at Oxfords Bodleian Library, Dr. Keith Small, is more emphatic and told the Times that if the dating is confirmed, as he believed would happen, it could raise serious problems for Islam, since This would radically alter the edifice of Islamic tradition.  The history of the rise of Islam in late Near Eastern antiquity would have to be completely revised.

Nonsense.  This recent discovery, far from threatening the edifice of Islamic tradition or rais[ing] problems for Islam is currently being used all around the Muslim world in support of Islam, for a number of reasons.

First, the carbon dating is not radically incongruous with Islamic dating.  It indicates that the text was written sometime between 568 and 645.  Muslim tradition holds that Muhammad lived between lived 570 and 632, and that the Koran was collated and finalized around 650.

In other words, if the text was written anytime from 610-645a full 35 years that fall within the range of the carbon testingit poses no problems for Islam, for Muslims believe that Muhammad began receiving revelations or the ayat that became the verses of the Koran when he was forty.  All it would mean is that, instead of believing that the Koran was collated in 650, portions of it were written down a few years earlier.

Hardly a thing to rock the faith of most Muslims.

In fact, there is very little that Western scholars and scientists can do or say about Islam that would have much influence on the Islamic mindset.  The fact is, over centuries, lots of things have emerged that should put the veracity of the Koran and Islam to the testwhether the plausible suggestion that Muhammad never existed, certainly not the Muhammad of Islamic tradition, or whether the fact that the Koran, which says of itself that it is written in pure Arabic (see 12:2, 13: 37), has several Syro-Aramaic words in it.  Or perhaps that the Koran says, very literally, that the sun sets in a pool of dark mud (18:86).

Science doesnt hold much weight with the modern Islamic mindsetnot when it contradicts the Koran.  The earth is round?  So say the lying infidels, responded the late Saudi grand mufti, Bin Baz: if the Koran says the earth is flat (88:20), the earth is flat!

Interestingly, even in the West, if people come to believe that the Koran predates Muhammad, it wont matter much: we will still be told to respect Islam since Muslims believe it.  Whether one rejects the prophethood of Muhammadthe definition of a non-Muslimor whether one rejects traditional Islamic chronology its the same conclusion: Islam is a false religion.

The problem here is that we are dealing with reciprocal projectionthe Western mentality projecting its onetime appreciation for reason onto Muslims, and the Muslim mentality projecting its own subversive methods onto the Other, the Infidel, the sworn enemy.  Westerners may think this will have an impact on Muslim faith because they know it would have an impact on their own. Conversely, Muslims, who from the start have built their faith on casting doubt and aspersions on the faiths of others, are convinced that any Western claim, scientific or otherwise, that casts doubts on the origins of Islam is merely the latest infidel conspiracy.

After all, was it not Muhammad himself who taught that the texts of Judaism and Christianitythe Bibleare corrupt and fraudulent.  Is it not obvious, Muslims are thinking, that the infidels will turn this argument on us by saying the Koran is of dubious authenticity?

If reason was a cornerstone of Islamic thinkingit was laid in its grave by the ulema in the 10th centuryMuslims would have lost faith in Islam a long time ago (many have and do but remain nominal Muslims due to fears of the apostasy penalty).

Meanwhile, its not the age of the Koran but its contents that speak against its veracity.

A book that calls for savagely killing all who do not submit to its authority; that calls for beheadings, crucifixions, and mutilations; that justifies theft, extortion, and the sexual enslavement of infidel women and children; a book that calls for everything ungodly but claims to have been written by God is false on principle.  Carbon dating is irrelevant.

But of course, while Western academics, politicians, and media can openly discuss this issue of the Korans datingafter all, its scientificcriticizing the Koran from a moral point of view, which is whats needed here, remains unthinkable (remember: morality is relative in the West).

And so, when all is said and done, the mantra that Islam is peace will continue to be chanted mindlessly in the West.
