The Solution of Poverty in Islam

0 Comments
Poverty is one of the most scary situations for man kind. No one wants to be poor. It is not because of the riches, as most people think it is, but it is because of the incapability to do anything in the state of poverty, that people do not want to be in this situation.

While there are some religions where poverty is seen as the sign of nearness to God, Islam does not share the same point of view. You should not confuse yourselves with simplicity and poverty. Islam encourages simplicity but not poverty. Allah swt has talked about poverty in glorious Quran in various places and has addressed it in various perspectives. For example, sometimes people want money not because they want to be rich, but because they fear poverty. This is the trap of satan. He does not want humans to be safe and content with what they have, but he incites the feelings of fear against tough circumstances. Hence, men do what they are forbidden to do. Allah swt say in the following verse;
[002:268] Shaitan scares you with (the prospect of) poverty, and bids you to adopt (lewd and) shameless conduct, while Allah promises you His forgiveness and (His) bounties! Allah is the Bounteous, the most Aware.
Thus, tough times are not a problem, problem is the lack of faith of the people. Allah swt promises His bounties and mercy to us for just one thing, faith and trust on Him. While satan wants to shatter it because this one thing destroys him. Satan knows that Allah's blessings are way to much than we can ever imagine, so he wants us to believe otherwise. But then again, Allah swt says that it is His blessings and His decision and His mercy, with which we can find rest and peace. Allah swt says in the following verse of Quran;
[009:028] Oh you believers, (remember)! those who ascribe partners to Allah are really unclean. Therefore, after (the pilgrimage) this year let them not come (anywhere) near the sacred mosque (in Makkah). If you fear poverty, Allah may soon enrich you as He wills. Indeed, Allah is the most Aware, the Wisest.
Thus, fearing poverty is not a sin, but doing an illegal act to get money and riches surely is. It has become a trend in recent years that some people are found selling or killing their children out of the fear that they may not be able to feed them. In most thirdly world countries, women are aborted because they don't want daughters or more children. Some parents were charged with murdering their own children because they had no food to feed them. For such people Allah swt say in Quran;
[017:031] Do not, out of fear of poverty, put your offspring to death. We shall provide them as well as you, the means of life. Killing your offspring is a blunder of a grave proportion.
So, whatever soul has been sent to earth, will be provided with sustenance. Its not that Allah swt has sent us and forgotten about us. HE knows us and our needs more than anything. Many prophets were poor but they did not loose their faith in Allah, rather they prayed. For example, the following verse says;
[028:024] Musa took care of their animals. Then, he sat in a shade and said, My Lord, I am poverty struck; in (desperate) need of whatever good You may grant me!
Even, Prophet Musa a.s, who was prophet of bani israel, prayed. So why cannot we? Prophet Muhammad pbuh taught us many prayers. Few of them are about poverty as well, for example, the following hadith contaisn a prayer;

Bukhari, Volume 8, Book 75, Number 386:
Narrated 'Aisha:
The Prophet used to say, "O Allah! I seek refuge with You from laziness from geriatric old age, from being in debt, and from committing sins. O Allah! I seek refuge with You from the punishment of the Fire, the afflictions of the grave, the punishment in the grave, and the evil of the affliction of poverty and from the evil of the affliction caused by Al-Masih Ad-Dajjal. O Allah! Wash away my sins with the water of snow and hail, and cleanse my heart from the sins as a white garment is cleansed of filth, and let there be a far away distance between me and my sins as You have set far away the East and the West from each other."
So even when such a situation arrives, one should not loose hope. Because mostly, fear of poverty makes people do what they should never do. Again, even if all the riches are given to men, they will not spend it for the fear of poverty if they do not believe in Allah swt. Therefore, no matter how much the things get worse, faith is the riches thing to keep.

Names of Allah and Their Importance

0 Comments
There are ninety nine names of Allah we know. These are not just His names but there are His attributes. The most favorite name that Allah swt has liked for Him is Allah. This name is unique in the sense that it has no plural, it cannot be changed as there is nothing that can change it. It cannot be shortened and it cannot be twisted. This names signifies the majesty and rule of Allah swt over all things.

Allah swt has spoken about His attributes ( names) in Quran in various places. In the following verse, Allah swt say;
[007:180] Allahs are the most beautiful names (and attributes). Invoke Him by those names, and part company with those who deny (or mock) His names (and attributes). They will soon be punished for what they are doing.
The verse says that Allah swt has the most beautiful names. That is, the attributes of Allah swt are the best and most perfect and beautiful in meaning. He swt further says that we should invoke Him with his beautiful names. Here, one thing should be remembered, there are some people who has invented some ways. They say that if you recite a name of Allah certain times, your wish will be granted etc. this is not how it is. We are not in Quran or sunnah about this. Allah swt has not told us His names for this. Instead, His attributes are a whole new world for us if we want to see. Just by going through them, we can know that what a beloved and gracious is our Lord. How beautiful and loving He is. How much He loves us and how much He cares for us even when we are just a creature. Thus, when in need, on may recite His names and invoke Him with them, but one should not make it a play.

In another verse, Allah swt say;
[017:110] Say, Call Him Allah, or call him Rehman. Whichever name you call Him by, (remember) His attributes are the most beautiful. During your salat, do not raise your voice too loud, nor lower it to a virtual whisper. Rather, adopt a moderate tone.
Therefore, all the greatness and goodness in the world is Allah's. Everything belong to Him. All the good comes from Him. Because He alone is the source of all the good. So, we should remember this simple fact. In another place, Allah swt say;
[020:008] He is Allah! There is no god but He; His are all the beautiful names.
Thus, the only true God who is worthy of all the worship is Allah swt. There are religions where there are different gods capable of doing one thing or another. But Allah is the true God, who does all the Lordly things. Think of any Godly, quality, and it is Allah swt. Of course, nothing evil and bad can come from Him. Whatever He decided has only the factor of good for us. Some times our faith dwindle in the times of trials, but that too has something good for us. It is not just to make us prove our loyalty to Allah swt, but it is also a time, when we can know if we are worthy enough? If we can keep ourselves whole and trust our own selves? Thus, Allah is the source of love and goodness.

Every attribute of Allah swt has a very deep meaning to it. For example, in the following hadith, it Is mentioned;

Bukhari, Volume 8, Book 73, Number 17:
Narrated Abu Huraira:
The Prophet said, "The word 'Ar-Rahm (womb) derives its name from Ar-Rahman (i.e., one of the names of Allah) and Allah said: 'I will keep good relation with the one who will keep good relation with you, (womb i.e. Kith and Kin) and sever the relation with him who will sever the relation with you, (womb, i.e. Kith and Kin).
To memorise the names of Allah brings us great reward as mentioned in the following sahih hadith;

Muslim, Book 035, Number 6475:
Abu Huraira reported Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying: There are ninety-nine names of Allah; he who commits them to memory would get into Paradise. Verily, Allah is Odd (He is one, and it is an odd number) and He loves odd number. And in the narration of Ibn 'Umar (the words are):" He who enumerated them."
May Allah swt help us memories His great names and makes us understand them. Ameen.

Tying the knot in the time of India riots

0 Comments

The setting was unusual for marital bliss, but it was no deterrent for the dozen-odd couples who tied the knot last week in a mass wedding at a relief camp for riot victims in Muzaffarnagar.
Having fled communal violence that recently swept parts of the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh and left scores dead and thousands homeless, the newly married couples of Malakpur relief camp held hands together and vowed to make a fresh beginning.
Mass weddings are not uncommon in India, where community and religious leaders sometimes host them for poorer communities to help ease their financial burden.

But a spurt of mass weddings at relief camps sheltering thousands displaced by the riots is evoking contrasting emotions. Some hail them as efforts to rebuild lives. Local authorities, however, see them as unnecessary distractions.
For the time being though, the riot-hit areas of Muzaffarnagar and Shamli districts in Uttar Pradesh are awash with mass weddings.
Mass marriages

According to media reports, 27 couples got married in a camp in Shahpur village on September 25. Seventy-two more tied the knot in Jolla village on October 4. On October 7, 155 more marriages took place in Shahpur, while another 32 couples took marriage vows in a village called Budhana.
Altogether, more than 300 marriages have now taken place since rioting between Hindus and Muslims in India's most populous state subsided little more than a month ago.
"People don't have money, especially now, so we want to help   them," said Dr Nadeem Chaudary, 30, a medical professional   and member of the Malakpur leadership committee, as he waited for the latest mass wedding to start.
"It's very tense here."
Driven to destitution by the riots and living in fear of fresh violence, residents of the relief camps agree with him.
The weddings perhaps give them a semblance of normalcy in abnormal times.
Weeks after the riots - Uttar Pradesh's worst since Hindu activists destroyed a mosque in the city of Ayodhya in 1992 -tensions between communities run high with erstwhile neighbours eyeing each other with suspicion.
It also gave the family of Raeshma, 16, an opportunity to hope again.

Despite her young age, her parents had arranged for her to marry another boy living in the relief camp. Both families had lost everything in the riots and the mass wedding organised at the relief camp gave them a window of opportunity to make a fresh start.
Azgari, Raeshma's mother, claimed the marriage would help the family considerably.
"We are so poor that we can't afford to have so many people in the family. Had we been at home, I would have got her married after two years."
It is not known whether Raeshma had any say in the family decision. But the likes of Azgari say they are not left with many choices in the harsh reality of the relief camps.
The 100-member-strong leadership committee of the Malakpur camp also did not seem perturbed by her young age.
Though Indian law prohibits child marriages, Muslim Personal Law does not impose any age restrictions for marriages for the community.
'Good for them'

At the mass wedding ceremony last week, prominent banners proclaiming "Group Marriages for Western UP Victims" were also put up. The sponsor of the ceremony was the Jamait Ulema-i-Hind.
The committee therefore raised Rs 15,000 ($244) for each couple, and bought new clothes and jewelry for the girls and dozens of cookware sets.
So at the wedding ceremony, each couple would get a bag containing the mehr, or groom's gift tothe bride, and another bag containing the jahayz, or household items for the new couple - as well as a cheque to help them settle in a new home, outside the camp.
Maulana Mahmood Mandni, the general secretary of the Jamait Ulema-i-Hind, flagged off the ceremony.
"We feel that if we organise this [weddings], it will be a gift for them, and good for them," he said. "They can get a homely feeling".
Authorities in Uttar Pradesh, however, viewed the weddings as a distraction from its three-month target of clearing up the camps.
"We never supported these marriages and told them they should encourage them only after they returned to their village," Raj Sharma, the district magistrate of Muzaffarnagar, told Al Jazeera.
But mass marriages continue nevertheless.

According to Madhu Kishwar, a prominent women activist and senior fellow at the Centre for the Study of Developing Societies in New Delhi, the motives behind the mass weddings are still unclear.
"In this case [of Muzaffarnagar], one would have to look at the specific ties of the case - how much of it was done for media, or how much of it was to make a point, or how much of it was to respond [to the communities]," she said.

"But it also shows that the state government has failed miserably, both at the law-and-order level and at the level of aiding the victims."
The state government has announced a rehabilitation package for Rs 500,000 ($8146) for victim's families. It also plans to send them back to their respective villages soon, though activists say it would take much longer than planned.
In the meantime, 68-year-old Shah Shamsad of the Shahpur relief camp is planning to marry off his 18-year-old daughter Naima when the next mass wedding take place and send her away.
"Because of the violence that happened, what if it happens again, to her?" he asks.
Nuptials, it seems, is increasingly being seen by riot victims in relief camps as a road to redemption.

Short story on caste bias, discrimination with poor students in educational institutions

0 Comments
This is the English translation of Ratna Kumar Sambharia's short-story 'Dronacharya Zinda HaiN'. For those who aren't aware of the background, Dronacharya taught royal family's children [in the epic, Mahabharata].

When he saw that a tribal youth Eklavya had better archery skills than his favourite disciple, Arjuna, then Dronacharya asked Eklavya to severe his thumb and give it away in guru-dakshina, so that Arjun remained the best warrior in the world.

Dronacharya had also refused to teach Karna, as the latter didn't belong to the high caste. Incidents of students coming suicides in top education institutions due to caste bias are quite common even today.

Read the story here:

The examination was over and the teacher had just compiled the result. Now, while preparing the merit list, he was looking at the result-sheet when he suddenly got a jolt.

Ramdin, the son of a mochi (cobbler), is the topper, has got more numbers than anyone else, even ahead of my own son. Everyone in the village would spit on my face that the boy [mochis son] is more intelligent even though his father mends the shoes. The Master sahib was really upset.

Furious, he got to his feet and rushed to the other side of the room. He unlocked the almirah and took out the stacks of answer-sheets. One after the other, each stack was opened. One answer-sheet was taken out from each stack and kept aside.

The selected answer-sheets were now placed in a corner of the table. Master sahib, took out his specs, cleaned the glasses and began re-evaluating Ramdins answer-sheets. Ample changes were made and the answer-sheets were again placed in the stacks and shut in the almirah.

A new result sheet had been prepared. After failing in the examin, Ramdin had taken up his ancestral work at his fathers shop.

The Pakistani servant girl tortured to death

0 Comments

The case of a 10-year-old girl in Pakistan's Punjab province, whose employers confessed to beating her to death last week, has highlighted concerns about child rights. The BBC's Saba Eitizaz reports on a case that shocked the nation.
Human rights organisations argue that Pakistan's labour laws ignore child abuse in a country where almost half the population is under the age of 18. It is an oversight which often has tragic consequences.
Evidence of that can be found in a small village in the province of Punjab, where a haunting wailing echoes off the crumbling mud walls of a ramshackle home.
It sounds like many mothers crying for lost children.
It is called the "wayne" - the song for the dead and is an integral part of the local funeral ritual.
Tortured
The village is called Moza Jindraakha which means "the place where life is protected".
But things are different now - a young girl's death is being mourned.
Iram Ramzan was sent to Lahore to cook for a middle class family - so her own family could eat. Her two sisters are also employed as domestic helps for different families.
But Iram came back in a white shroud - apparently tortured to death by her employers.
Her mother Zubaida Bibi, who has lost her hand in a threshing accident, faced the prospect of bringing up three young daughters without a husband's financial support.
Zubaida says that she had little option but to send her daughters out to earn money as domestic servants.
She thought they would be safer in more affluent homes rather than on the streets. But she was wrong and has had to go through the torture of burying her youngest child - and now she does not know where to bury her guilt.
"Maybe we should have begged for scraps instead," the inconsolable mother laments. "How was I to know I was sending my daughter to her tormentors?"
Last year Iram's family was telephoned by a distant uncle in Lahore telling them to rush to the hospital.
'An accident'
Doctors said she had died on arrival. There were torture marks on her body and rope burns on her wrists and feet.
Her employers, the Mahmood family had brought her in. The police immediately took the family into custody.
The girl had been beaten to death with an iron pipe, which was later found in the Mahmood's home, along with the ropes used to tie her up.
Nasira Mahmood has confessed to repeatedly beating the child with the pipe while her 16-year-old son stood by and watched.
In jail, Mrs Mahmood is having tea and biscuits. She is almost casual when asked why she did it, saying it was all an accident and that no one expected Iram to die.
"Three times she stole money from me. I got angry, that's all," she says. "She said she was getting sleepy so I tied her up and left to make dinner."
'Indications of beating'
Police investigators say that Iram died slowly, not accidentally and breathed her last while still tied up.
"Right away, they admitted to having tortured her," says Police Superintendent Umar Cheema.
"There were marks of violence, indications of beating, swelling, indicating that the girl was tortured with a heavy instrument which later turned out to be a domestic gas pipe."
Iram's employers were paying her $23 (14) a month - a small price to pay for her life.
In the same week that Iram died, another 15-year-old domestic maid, Azra, was found strangled to death in her employer's home in Lahore, allegedly the victim of sexual abuse before she was killed.
The Society For the Protection of the Rights of the Child (Sparc) say they receive about 20 cases like Iram and Azra's every year. These are just the cases where a child has died. There are many others featuring assault and abuse, many of which go unreported.
Sparc representative Sajjad Cheema says that whatever legislation for children that does exist is not being implemented because there are no administrative mechanisms in place to regulate child workers.
"The United Nations has sent a recommendation to the Pakistan government to adopt a child protection policy," Mr Cheema says. "We need to know whether we are going to let these children work like this, to die, or are we going to protect them, and how will we do it?"
Human rights groups say more than 12 million children are pushed onto the streets and the homes of strangers to seek an income.
Without a legal safety net, these children are slipping through the cracks with no one to catch them.
Meanwhile, in the village of Moza Jindraakha, a child-sized mound of earth marks Iram's resting place.
Right next to the graveyard, is a green and yellow field where she used to play with the other children - before her childhood and her life was cut short by a combination of cruelty, official indifference and poverty.

The Types of Magic

0 Comments
Allah SWT has said in the Holy Quran:
[002:102] They followed what the evil ones gave out (falsely) against the power of Solomon: the blasphemers Were, not Solomon, but the evil ones, teaching men Magic, and such things as came down at babylon to the angels Harut and Marut. But neither of these taught anyone (Such things) without saying: "We are only for trial; so do not blaspheme." They learned from them the means to sow discord between man and wife. But they could not thus harm anyone except by God's permission. And they learned what harmed them, not what profited them. And they knew that the buyers of (magic) would have no share in the happiness of the Hereafter. And vile was the price for which they did sell their souls, if they but knew!
The above verse says that magic is nothing but harm. It would bring no happiness but sorrow. Also, this verse indicates that no one can harm no one except by Allah's leave. If some one succeeds to harm others by the use of magic, then its no his success but he is driven further into this false belief that he can harm others.

The scholars of Islam has divided sihir into different types on the scale of severity. But their two broad classifications are

1: Sihr haqeeqy

This is the type of magic which comprises of the worst and the most dangerous kind of magic. Its effects are real. For example, the above verse mentioned about sowing hatred between husband and wife. Thus, a type of magic which does the real harm falls under the category of real or haqeeqy magic.

2: Sihr Takhyeel

This is the type of magic which alters the mind of people. Mostly people report that they see things which otherwise do not exist. Or they see things which change into something else all of a sudden. But no such change is seen by others. Thus, this kind of magic changes the ideology of people.

These types of magic involve devils/jinns. Just like human beings, there are jinns. Just like there exist wrong people , there exist kafir Jinn. These kafir jinns are used by magicians to practice evil.

3: practiced by hand

then there is the form of magic which is practiced by hands. Magicians use tricks  to deceive the viewers. This type of magic does not need any devils. But still, these tricks which make people believe that some other power is used is wrong. Because it weakens the belief of a Muslim.

There are people who claim knowledge and hidden powers, they use all types of magic to sow discord among people, to kill people, to destroy people and to get their hands on money and wealth.

Prophet Muhammad pbuh strictly forbade to use magic in the following hadith;
Sahih Muslim, Book 001, Number 0161:
It is reported on the authority of Abu Huraira that the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) observed: Avoid the seven noxious things. It was said (by the hearers): What are they, Messenger of Allah? He (the Holy Prophet) replied: Associating anything with Allah, magic, killing of one whom God has declared inviolate without a just cause, consuming the property of an orphan, and consuming of usury, turning back when the army advances, and slandering chaste women who are believers, but unwary.
Scholars say that whatever the type of magic may be, the use of it is forbidden. Because one cannot buy any benefit by bewitching others. Secondly, magic is shirk as it means to take help from satan. And thirdly, there is no success in a successful magic practice as it deactivates and it only effects other by the will of Allah.

Is Magic Real?

0 Comments
Magic was introduced in world by two angels haroot and maroot. According to some historical narrations, haroot and maroot wished to spend some time in world like humans. Allah swt told them that they could never do so, but He granted, their wish and they were descended to earth. They knew magic so people asked them about it. They warned people about the use of it. It is said that the most dangerous magic, which includes separation between husband and wife was used by people in their time. For the sin of these two angels, their powers were taken away and they were chained at some lonely place. It is said that they are still chained there.

In the times of Prophet Suleman a.s, some people practiced magic. When he got to know about it, he gathered all those books and strictly prohibited magic. According to some Jewish traditions, he ( a.s) buried those books beneath his chair ( throne ). This shows that magic existed long before prophet Suleman a.s. This is why Jews use magic and practice it as their religion and wrongfully relate it with prophet Suleman a.s. The pharaoh in times of prophet Moses a.s. Also used to practice magic to retain his glory and power. This is also mentioned in Holy Quran. Allah swt gave success to prophet Moses over the magicians and upon seeing that, those magicians accepted Islam and renounced evil practices. The following verses of Quran say about the incidents;
[002:102]They pursued whatever the Shaitans recited (and related) to them in the name and authority of King Sulaiman. It was not Sulaiman who disbelieved (or disobeyed). The Shaitans disbelieved (and denied). They taught people the craft of magic and that (esoteric) art that was revealed to the two angels, Harut and Marut at Babylon. Before the two angels would teach that craft to anyone, they would declare, We are actually just a trial for you. So do not (succumb to temptations and) be the disbelievers. Yet they studied from those two (angels), that which caused estrangement between a man and his wife. No one could they harm by it, except by Allahs permission. They studied that which could only hurt them; it did not benefit them (at all). They definitely knew that the one who acquires this (craft) shall have no share in the (blessings of the) life-to-come. And evil indeed was what they purchased (and paid for) with their souls! If only they knew.
[010:079]The Pharaohs ordered, Have all the expert magicians summoned before me!
According to some historians, the place from where magic started and spread is the modern day iraq. This place still holds the ancient books on magic. According to some independent and verified research, magic is still used by the most powerful people to retain their position and power.

Magic is one of the greatest sins that humans commit. As some Muslims would say that there is nothing like magic. Then there surely is magic. Magic exists this is why it Is mentioned in Quran. Our beloved prophet Muhammad pbuh was also affected by magic. A pagan practiced magic on him and he pbuh started to forget things. This is when Allah swt revealed surah an-nass and surah al-falak as a remedy against magic. It is sunnah of prophet Muhammad pbuh to recite these surahs at different times of day to be protected from evil.

One thing should be remembered that this evil from satan cannot last. It is a common misconception spread by some people that magic lasts for years. And that there is no remedy of black magic. This is all wrong.  Allah swt say in Quran;
[010:081] When they did, Musa said, Surely, what you have wrought is just magic! Allah will inactivate it! Allah does not correct the acts of the mischievous ones!
Thus, magic is inactivated by Allah and those who practice It, if they do not realize their mistakes, then they have no friend and they can never be helped by Allah swt.
