Syrian mother's agony: why I made my teenage daughter become a child bride

Um Rulla

We left in February last year: me, my husband Ahmed and our seven children two sons and five daughters. I borrowed 5,000 Syrian pounds (20) from my mother to hire a car to drive us from our home in Deraa to the border with Jordan.
When we got to the borderlands, we had to walk with other Syrian families who were fleeing Syria too. We were walking at night to avoid being spotted by Syrian security, who would shoot at us. It was so risky, but I was more scared of what would come next, what sort of life we would have in the refugee camp.

Finally we got into Za'ateri camp, which was like paradise compared with the hell of Deraa. And yet I became worried about the safety of my five daughters. My husband is old and not well, and my sons are little boys. There is no one to protect us. The tents are too close to each other, young men would pass by and stare at our tent.
My eldest daughter, Rulla, was 13 and is attractive. She and her other sisters could not even change their clothes in the tent. We were so scared that my daughters and I might be attacked by strangers. The camp was full of men of different ages. I could not let my daughters go alone to the bathroom, I had to take them one by one even though the bathrooms were far away. Along the way we would be harassed by young men. If any of my daughters wanted a wash, we would have a basin in the tent, and I or my mother would keep watch in case anyone came.
Looking around I could see that families were trying to get their daughters married by any means, even if they were only 12 or 13. They were not asking for dowries, they just wanted a man for their daughters.

My daughters were a huge burden to me. I never thought I would think of them like that. I was so glad when they born. You can't imagine the fear of a mother when she looks at her daughter and she thinks that she might be raped at any moment. It is horrible to think if the rape story became known publicly, her uncles would kill her immediately. I felt like dying when I thought of that moment.
Most of the marriages in the camp are for girls of 12, 13 or 14, but even 10-year-olds might get engaged if they are tall and developed. The way it works is that a female relative of the groom tours the tents to find a girl. When she finds someone suitable, she brings her to the man, who asks for her hand. The groom might be Syrian or Jordanian or from other Arab nationalities.
A 70-year-old Saudi man married the daughter of my neighbour. She was already engaged to a Syrian man but her family could not believe their luck in getting a rich Saudi, so they dumped the first groom to make way for the second. The Saudi man had to pay the family 1m Syrian pounds to marry their young daughter.
It was a big shock when an old Jordanian man came to my mother's tent asking for her hand. He said that he wanted to provide her with a better life and spare her humiliation. These Jordanians are really exploiting Syrian refugees' terrible circumstances.

An acquaintance in a nearby tent had an 18-year-old nephew, Omer, who worked in an embroidering workshop. She told him about our daughter, came to our tent and told us that she wanted Rulla for her nephew. Rulla blushed in astonishment. For me, it was hard to accept the idea. She was still a child, playing with kids in the camp. But the war, hunger, humiliation and fear forced me in the end to accept the offer. It was difficult to throw my daughter into a new life I do not know and she herself does not know either. Rulla knew nothing about marriage, I had to teach her every single thing.
We rented two houses in Amman, one for Omer and one for us. The groom brought jewellery and even paid for a wedding ceremony. We had to take in the wedding dress to make it fit Rulla's tiny body. I had to tell her how to behave with her husband. I asked her if she loved her groom. She said she did, but I was not sure that she knew the real meaning of love.
I fumbled to illustrate things to her bluntly. I told her that her husband might get too close to her, he would kiss her and she should not shudder but welcome that. I did not want to scare her with the whole story of marriage. I told her that her husband would teach her how to be a good wife. I sat for two hours with the groom himself before he married my daughter. I tried to prepare him for the fact that he was getting married to a child, not a mature woman, and that he needed to be more tolerant with her.

The second day after the wedding, I ran to see Rulla and asked her how her night had been. She told me it was OK and that everything went well. I'm praying all the time that her marriage will last. The problem is Rulla can't forget that she is still a child though she is married now. In one of my visits, it was terribly shocking to see her wearing socks and slipping about on the floor like other children in the house. I told her she should not do that because she is a married woman now. She said:"Oh mum, I really like to run like before and play with other girls."
Rulla now lives with her husband's family because she needs her mother-in-law to guide her. She has been married for five months now. I do not think her husband will allow her to complete her studies. He wants her to focus on her house and kids.
Ten days ago, I took Rulla to the hospital, thinking she was pregnant but the doctor found that she had an ovarian cyst. That was bad and good news for me at the same time. Deep in my heart I was content that she won't get pregnant soon because she herself is still a child and her marriage is not documented, which means the baby would not have a birth certificate. I still ask myself every day if I was fair to Rulla.

Islamic State torches 1,800-year-old church after expelling Christians

"The day before their final exodus, Christians were informed jizya was no longer an option. The order came to convert, leave, or die."

"With Baghdad as the prize in mind, [ISIS] has grown in size from 3,000 by earlier estimates to 20,000 as last months offensive bolstered their standing."

The abolition of the jizya tax is the most important part of this story.

by Adam Chandler, The Wire (via JihadWatch) July 22, 2014
with comments by Robert Spencer and Ralph Sidway

ISIS, which recently rebranded as the Islamic State, has solidified its control over Iraqs second-largest city by imposing Sharia law and expelling Christians who wont convert to Islam. The end of last month marked the first time a mass wasnt held in the city in more than 1600 years.
Then, matters got worse. From the Daily Beast:

Friday at noon was the deadline for Christian families to meet ISISs demands: Convert to Islam, pay an anachronistic Islamic tax for non-Muslims known as jizya, leave Mosul, or be killed. But the day before the final exodus, Christians were informed jizya was no longer an option. The order came to convert, leave, or die.

 _______

In his post on this story, Robert Spencer over at Jihad Watch comments on the idea of the jizya being "anachronistic":
This anachronistic Islamic tax is actually in the Quran, which no Muslim would describe as anachronistic: Fight those who believe not in Allah nor the Last Day, nor hold that forbidden which hath been forbidden by Allah and His Messenger, nor acknowledge the religion of Truth, (even if they are) of the People of the Book, until they pay the Jizya with willing submission, and feel themselves subdued (Quran 9:29).
I would hasten to add that the Islamic State's abolition of jizya as an option for Christians and other non-Muslims is a clear sign that caliph Al-Baghdadi sees his role as hastening the end times. As I relate in my book, Facing Islam:
In Islam, Prophet Isa is expected to return, but to condemn the Christians misunderstanding of him as divine and to literally destroy Christianity and judge all non-Muslims... The Prophet Isa will be a good Muslim, and will direct his followers to the Mahdi, the Muslim messiah, before taking a subservient position somewhat behind the Mahdi. Isa will fight the people for the cause of Islam. He will break the cross, kill the swine and abolish jizya and establish the rule of Allah throughout the world. (Hadith from Sunan Abu Dawud, Book of Battles, 37:4310.)

The ending of jizya and the dhimma (the Islamic 'protection' contract offered to Christians who choose not to convert to Islam) must be seen as one of the most dark and ominous signs of this already dark and ominous explosion of the global jihad. The jihadis all of them see all this in apocalyptic terms. This explains their religious fervor, as well as their growing appeal to the global Muslim ummah.
_______

On the way out of town last week, the final 1500 families of Mosuls Christian population were reportedly robbed at ISIS checkpoints. And following Fridays deadline, ISIS reportedly set fire to a 1800-year-old church.

Last month, ISIS shocked much of the world by swiftly capturing Mosul in an offensive that allowed the group to take control of major parts of northern and western Iraq. As Reuters reported, the group has managed to shore up its control over communities with a combination of force and fear. After meeting armed resistance in the town of al-Alam for nearly two weeks, heres what the group did:

They kidnapped 30 local families and rang up the towns most influential citizens with a simple message about the hostages: You know their destiny if you dont let us take over the town.

Weeks later, according to the report, only a few gunman patrol the town at night so comfortable is the Islamic State in its control through fear. Since then, with Baghdad as the prize in mind, the group has grown in size from 3,000 by earlier estimates to 20,000 as last months offensive bolstered their standing.

India supports Palestine at BRICS summit and UN, opinion poll shows Indians too stand against Israel: 75% Indians support Palestine, just 15% for Israel

Of late, we often hear that the public opinion in India is shifting and is now inclined towards Israel.

You don't need to rake your brains to think about those who are behind this new found knowledge about Indian masses & public opinion.

On Monday, a journalist tweeted that within three decades, India has become one of the most pro-Israel nations.

There was nothing to substantiate this insight though. He didn't reveal what made him believe that Indians were no longer pro-Palestine.

Right-wing folks have been trumpeting their admiration for Israel. In India, the unique thing is that the same group also eulogizes Hitler.

Clearly, any state that commits mass murders, brutality and genocide is their ideal, with no moral issues for them. The vocal right-wing supporters can keep claiming that Indians are turning pro-Israel, because propaganda works to an extent.

The BJP victory or the Congress loss doesn't mean that Indian have become pro-Israel or anti-Palestine.

In fact, for a large number of Indians, it may not be an issue to align with one side. For them, it will be of siding with humanity. If any ordinary person sees the images of innocents killed in Gaza, he or she would naturally support the victim.

Just seven decades ago, we won our independence from an imperial power that also used brutality as a state weapon against the subjects.

However, the propagandists know that if they keep repeating lies, half-lies, assumptions and their beliefs, it will have some impact on others too.

But the biggest shock for the Israel-supporter propagandists in India came on Tuesday.

India voted in support of UN resolution on Gaza, calling for investigation against Israel. Suddenly, there was silence among the pro-Israel Twitterati, as they rued and expressed sadness at the Indian stand.

For them, it was almost unbelievable that a BJP government led by Narendra Modi would continue the traditional Indian policy on Palestine. Self-styled ideologues who think they have brought Narendra Modi-led BJP to power, were upset and said that it was unexpected.

After the Indian vote at UNHRC, a journalist Sadanand Dhume, who lives in  USA, also claimed that mood in India was pro-Israel. Other pro-BJP journalists termed Indian vote as 'monumental blunder'. Indian call for implementation of UN resolution, was criticised by them.

MEANWHILE. In Rio, the Prime Minister also signed the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) censure of Israeli offensive in Gaza. What more? Minister of External Affairs Sushma Swaraj says Indian policy towards Palestine remains unchanged.

And if you want to know about public opinion. Check this opinion poll by Hindustan Times on who should India support in the Middle East conflict. While 75% say Indians should be supporting Palestine, just 15% say that the country should stand by Israel. LINK TO THE POLL

This is the situation when it is well-known that right-wing has a disproportionately big presence on the internet. So there is no sign that Indians have turned pro-Israel, en masse. The propagandists can, of course, chant otherwise.

Is Insisting Every Adulterer Must Get Stoned REALLY "Extremist" in Islam?

"The 'prophet' of Islam sanctioned stoning for adultery; the practice was legal praxis in many Islamic societies across the 14 centuries from his time to today; and clear majorities of Muslims in many countries approve of it.  How, then, is it 'extremist'?"

by Timothy R. Furnish, Mahdi Watch July 20, 2014

A few days ago the Iraqi-Syrian caliphate meted out the punishment of stoning for a woman accused of adultery.  Predictably, many media outlets decried the "extremists" who carried out such a heinous sentence.

But is stoning in such cases really "extremist" according to Islamic doctrines and public opinion?  No. There are at least five authoritative hadiths--sayings going back to Islam's founder, Muhammad--which mandate such a method of execution for adulterers.

[Such as this:

Umar said, I am afraid that after a long time has passed, people may say, We do not find the Verses of the Rajam (stoning to death) in the Holy Book, and consequently they may go astray by leaving an obligation that Allah has revealed. Lo! I confirm that the penalty of Rajam be inflicted on him who commits illegal sexual intercourse, if he is already married and the crime is proved by witnesses or pregnancy or confession. Sufyan added, I have memorized this narration in this way. Umar added, Surely Allahs Apostle carried out the penalty of Rajam, and so did we after him (Sahih Bukhari 8.82.816).
See this article for comprehensive proof of stoning in Islam.]

And according to Pew data from 2012, in many Muslim countries of the Mideast, Africa and South Asia large majorities want shari`ah to be implemented, and most of them in turn favor stoning for adulterers/adulteresses:

The "prophet" of Islam sanctioned stoning for adultery; the practice was legal praxis in many Islamic societies across the 14 centuries from his time to today; and clear majorities of Muslims in many countries approve of it.  How, then, is it "extremist?"  Brutal, harsh, vindictive, bloody, barbaric, outmoded--but according to Islamic history and modern sentiments, stoning is not "extremist" at all.

Public stoning in Qajar Iran (19th century).

Apologists can sputter all they want, but the fact is that many of the world's Muslims would not feel that what ISIS just did is beyond the pale; on the contrary, like the Taliban or Boko Haram, ISIS at least has the courage of its Qur'anic and Muhammadan convictions--appalling as that may be.

For those (liberals and Muslims) who stupidly maintain that there is no difference between Islam and Christianity, between Muslims and Christians--I leave you with this clip from "Jesus of Nazareth."

Incidents of rapes in India: Under-reporting of crimes, policemen's reluctance in registering FIRs and media focus on certain states

There has been outrage over recent incidents of rapes in Uttar Pradesh (UP). Samajwadi Party (SP) leaders feel that UP is being targeted and they claim that UP doesn't record the highest number of rapes.

This is true. In fact, statistics can't be relied upon in India, easily. The reason is the old practice of 'burking' or  non-registration of crimes.

UP may be much behind MP as far as number of rapes is concerned, but if you have to see the 'lawlessness' or 'crime situation' in a state, then the parameter is always--MURDER.

Murder or homicide, is a crime, which the police have to register anyhow [though in case of unclaimed bodies, the police can still hush up to an extent].

They can't hush it up so easily. As far as murders are concerned, UP tops the list with 5,047 murders in a year.

After UP, Bihar is a far second with 3,441 murders, Maharashtra recorded 2,512 murders, followed by AP 2,484, West Bengal 2,264 and Madhya Pradesh 2,112.

If one goes by the basic anology of crime then the state that has most murders would also be leading in other violent crimes including rapes and molestation incident.

If UP doesn't lead and is far behind even a state which has less than half of UP's population, [and is also behind Rajasthan, Maharashtra] suspicion rises that the crimes are not being registered. In heartland, it is very common, especially in rural areas, to not register the FIRs.

Taking application, not registering FIR

In cases of rapes, it is common to take the complaint or 'jaanch mein le liya hai'. So the 'darkhwast' or 'aavedan' is taken, but the application is just kept aside, it is not registered as a crime. Its a common tendency among policemen (station officers), as they want to keep the number of crimes at the police station low.

This practice of not registering crime is common. Apart from murders, the major crimes which are considered heinous are robberies (loots) and rapes. The figure of robberies is also brought down shrewdly in many states.

Hushing up cases to bring down figures of heinous crimes

If your gold chain (or wallet) is snatched by bike-riding snatchers or looters, then ideally, a case under section 392 should be registered. Instead, the police in many states, register it under section 379 (theft). So that's how the crimes are brought 'under control'.

UP records such a high number of murders, abductions and other violent crimes, but when it comes to rape, the figure is not as high. Clearly, there is less registration of cases.  This tendency can't be checked unless superiors take the SHOs/SOs to task.

Also, the politicians should give the go-ahead to police to register each and every crime. But they also dislike the brouhaha over 'rising crimes' and let the cops continue with this practice. When one incident of rape can bring down a government or at leash push the CM to the corner, why would administration give the order to policemen to treat all complaints as FIRs.

More focus on crimes in UP than in Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Gujarat or Orissa

But there is another aspect to it. UP is the most populous state in the country and being close to Delhi, there is definitely more focus on crimes here, compared to states like Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Gujarat or even Orissa. Media is more charitable to even other states in the North India.

There are gang rapes and rape-cum-murders in many other states, which never get covered in national media. There is also a comfort factor of journalists with certain regimes. Certain states have more crimes but it won't get as much criticism.

There are multiple factors. So, politicians and police also fear the excessive 'negative coverage'. Ideally, each case should be registered and there should be proper investigation, so that culprits are arrested. But at times there is selective [disproportionate] anger over certain cases, while there is no mention of equally heinous crimes in some other states.

Assam records nearly 2,000 rapes though UP with seven times population registered 3,000 rapes

Assam is a small state compared to UP, Maharashtra or MP. It is almost 1/6-1/7th [13-14%] in population to UP, but when it comes to rape, the difference is startling. Assam records 1,937 rapes, compared to 3,050 (UP), which is almost 2/3rd [66%].

Isn't it unbelievable? Also, there is another aspect. The huge state of Bihar records 1,128 rapes, much less than Delhi. So Delhi that has a population of around 1.5 crore registers far more number of rapes than in the entire Bihar state, which has a population of over 10 crore!

Just see the figures:

India registered 32, 613 murders in 2013

UP 5,047
Bihar 3,441
Mah 2,512
AP 2,484
WB 2,264
MP 2,112

India registered 31,967 rapes in 2013

MP 4,335
Rajasthan 3,285
Maharashtra 3,063
UP 3,050
Assam 1,937
Orissa 1,832
WB 1,685
Delhi 1,636
Bihar 1,128

[UP 19.9 crore, Maharashtra 11.2 crore, Bihar 10.3 crore, WB 9.1 crore, MP 7.2 crore, Orissa 4.1 crore, Assam 3.1 crore et al]

Stolen uranium compounds not only dirty bomb ingredients within ISIS' grasp, say experts

Iraqi government warns that ISIS has stolen at least 88 pounds of uranium.
 Follow-up to this story.

by Perry Chiaramonte, FoxNews.com July 15, 2014

Plenty of materials for a potential dirty bomb are likely scattered throughout the area of Iraq controlled by ISIS, and pulling off an attack that spreads even a minor amount of radiation could be a huge PR coup for the terror group, experts told FoxNews.com.

Last week, the Iraqi government in Baghdad warned the UN that ISIS operatives had stolen 88 pounds of uranium compounds from Mosul University. Even though many experts said the research materials were not enough to cause widespread harm, spreading fear is even more important to terrorists than a big body count, one terrorism expert said. And with ISIS in control of a huge swath of northern Iraq and parts of Syria that includes research labs, hospitals and industrial sites, ingredients for radiation-spreading bombs are within its grasp.

"Obtaining radiological material from places like universities or hospitals is relatively easy if you have the firepower, a chaotic situation and jihadists willing to sacrifice their health handling it, said Ryan Mauro, national security analyst for The Clarion Project, a think tank that studies Islamic extremism. We aren't talking about producing a nuclear bomb; just combining an explosive with radioactive material."

"Obtaining radiological material from places like universities or hospitals is relatively easy if you have the firepower, a chaotic situation and jihadists willing to sacrifice their health handling it.
- Ryan Mauro, The Clarion Project

Dirty bombs explosives that propel lower-level radioactive materials into the air - are far less dangerous than bombs that deliver weaponized nuclear radiation. But that doesnt mean they cant be an effective tool for terror. The bomb itself is more theoretical than threat, because to date, none is known to ever have been successfully detonated. In fact, there are only two recorded cases of dirty bombs being made, both by Chechen separatists in Russia, but neither was detonated.

In 2006, UK national Dhiren Barot pleaded guilty to conspiring to attack targets in his country and the U.S. with dirty bombs, targeting parking garages as well as the New York Stock Exchange, the CitiBank building in Manhattan, and the Prudential building in Newark, N.J.

In 2002, Jose Padilla, an Islamic convert and suspected Al Qaeda associate, was arrested on suspicion of plotting a dirty bomb attack and held for three years as an enemy combatant. Those charges were later dropped, but Padilla remains in a federal prison on other charges.

ISIS claims to have established a caliphate called Islamic State under strict Sharia law in a vast region stretching from northeastern Syria into much of Iraq's north, including the major cities of Fallujah, Tikrit and Mosul. Those cities and other ones under the group's control include hospitals, research facilities and industrial sites.

The uranium compounds that were stolen from the science research labs of Mosul University were heavily diluted, and several experts downplayed their effectiveness even for a dirty bomb. But having captured a huge part of Iraq, one of the worlds most feared terrorist organizations could easily get its hands on hospital waste, mining materials and other research equipment that, coupled with a conventional explosive, could produce a dirty bomb.

The mere threat is enough to accomplish their goal, said Matthew Bunn, a professor with the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs at Harvard University.

The intent of a dirty bomb is to cause panic with the fear of the radioactivity, Bunn said. But that may be more difficult to do if governments can quickly confirm that the amount of radioactivity involved is not a threat to anybody. Though that in itself is problematic when there's so much distrust on the subject of radiation risks.

But the risk posed by the lower-level nuclear materials potentially within ISIS' reach is shared by the group itself. Handling of nuclear materials is extremely dangerous, a fact underscored last December when a truck containing highly radioactive cobalt-60 was stolen en route from a Mexican hospital to a disposal site. The theft triggered alerts throughout Mexico, as well as international notifications to the U.S. and the International Atomic Energy Agency in Vienna and stoked fears the material could have been stolen to make a dirty bomb.

Six people who had come in contact with the stolen shipment suffered skin irritations and dizziness, but none died. That material was used for obsolete radiation therapy equipment.

While a dirty bomb would not cause nuclear fallout, an explosion would still be considered a success.

Some experts will point out that contaminating a large area with lethal areas of radiation is more difficult but they are missing the point, Mauro said. ISIS wants to surpass Al Qaeda and Al Qaeda hasn't grabbed global headlines with a radiological or "dirty bomb" attack.

"[A dirty bomb attack] would create a media firestorm," Mauro added. "And the subsequent costly clean-up operation will act as a constant reminder of how ISIS succeeded in an area that Al Qaeda did not.

CHRISTIAN HOLOCAUST UNDERWAY IN IRAQ, USA AND WORLD LOOK ON

The destruction of Iraqi Christian Churches, visible signs of the new Christian Holocaust.

When U.S. troops invaded Iraq in 2003, there were at least 1.5 million Christians in Iraq. Over the last ten years, significantly in the last few months with the emergence of ISIS, that figure has dropped to about 400,000.

In a region where Christians predate Muslims by centuries, over one million Christians have been killed or have had to flee because of jihadi persecution, while America is basically standing by and watching. This is the sad news that Breitbarts National Security Editor and one of the worlds leading experts on asymmetric warfare, Dr. Sebastian Gorka, brought to Breitbart News Saturday, hosted by Editor in Chief Alex Marlow on Sirius XM Patriot Radio.

A marked Christian home: 'Convert to Islam, leave, or die.'
Dr. Gorka explained that in the last 48 hours, ISIS, which is now called the Islamic State in Mosul, has painted the letter N for Nazarene on the houses of all the surviving Christians in the city. ISIS has basically given an ultimatum to all the Christians left: You can either flee or convert to Islam, or we will kill you.

Gorka points out that, over the last 20 years, America has stood up around the world to save Muslims. Whether it was to save the Muslims in Bosnia or the Albanians, Kosovars, and Muslims in Serbia, it is now time for a humanitarian operation to save the remaining Christians in Iraq, he said. It is time for the American people and our representatives to do something for our co-religionists remaining in the Middle East.

Marlow observed that the blatant religious cleansing is horrifying and asked Gorka: Why is it that the mainstream press is not interested in the story? Gorka first responded by saying "Let's face it, this is a Christian version of the Holocaust and nothing less.

The Middle East expert went on to explain that the mainstream media is in full support of the White House narrative that the President single-handedly killed Osama Bin Laden, and that Al Qaeda is now on the ropes; therefore, jihad must be shriveling up around the world. This myopic strategy of only targeting Al Qaeda has provided great opportunities for other jihadists and has given rise to ISIS.

On top of that, Gorka asserts that, "the mainstream media are warped in terms of their world view. According to Breitbarts national security expert, the media is post-modernist, sophisticated, and secularist. So when it comes to the idea of religious persecution, they say, Well who really cares because I dont believe in God. If you are not sophisticated enough to be a post-modernist secularist... tough on you!

Gorka didn't finish there with his scathing indictment of the mainstream media. He added that it is their racism that will let this genocide of Christians continue. To the mainstream media, Gorka charged, the dark skin person always has to be the victim. Either the Hamas terrorist in Gaza, the Nicaraguan gang bangers coming across the border likened to juvenile political refugees... the idea that the white skin Christian or the Israelis as victims, that goes against every narrative this media wishes to pedal. They are necessarily so locked into their own ideological vision of the world.

Marlow summed it up by saying, Christians are politically targeted in America frequently; they are being physically targeted in Africa, Syria, and Iraq. Gorka emphasized that, from his first hand experiences in Africa, Christians will always be blamed for starting any upheaval.

This Group Faces Terrifying Persecution, And You May Have Never Heard About It

Anti-Muslim sentiment has a long history in Myanmar, dating back to the colonial period when large numbers of Indians followed the British into the country, as theCrisis Group details in its report. Many of them were Muslims, although Hindus and members of other religions moved in as well. Tensions between Buddhists and Rohingya Muslims in Rakhine State became violent for the first time during World War II, when the Rohingya supported the country's colonial rulers and the Buddhists sided with Japanese invaders.
Violence and repression flared in the decades that followed and intensified in earnest in the spring of 2012. The rape of a Buddhist girl by several Muslim men set off a wave of reprisal violence in Rakhine State, and members of both communities took part in attacks.
Months later, in October of 2012, a new wave of violence by ethnic Buddhists against Rohingya Muslims broke out, this time in a much more organized way. Local authorities and extremist Buddhist monks riled up Rakhine's Buddhist majority, releasing pamphlets that demonized the Rohingya and public statements that called for their expulsion. Buddhist mobs responded by razing and torching Muslim villages, forcing the inhabitants to flee for their lives.
More than 200 people were killed in the violence of 2012, and about a hundred thousand people -- mostly Muslims -- were forced to leave their homes. The majority ended up in segregated makeshift camps, where their movements became more restricted than ever before.
The following year, attacks spread to the center of the country and were no longer restricted to the Rohingya community, instead targeting Muslims as a whole. Dozens of people were killed and entire neighborhoods destroyed in two waves of riots in the spring and fall of 2013.
