Concept Of God In Islam

Every religion has a supreme figure called God,  worthy of worship and reverence. Islamic concept of God is totally different from all other religions. Islam is a monotheistic religion that is, there is only one God, ALLAH swt, the supreme, the most high and worthy of worship. No matter how many monotheistic religions are out there other than Islam, they do not believe in God and His oneness in the same way as Islam does.

The base of Islam is tawheed, i.e. oneness of ALLAH. There is no one beside Him who could be given the same status, otherwise it would be shirk and shirk is biggest sin which will not be pardoned. On many places in glorious Quran, ALLAH swt mentioned to us that we must believe in His oneness in order to be good muslims. There are numerous verses in Quran that also state about those nations who did not consider Him the one, or gave Him due respect or prescribed partners to Him. Prophet Muhammad pbuh said,

"O Mu'adh! Do you know what Allah's Right upon His slaves is?" I said, "Allah and His Apostle know best." The Prophet said, "To worship Him (Allah) Alone and to join none in worship with Him (Allah). Do you know what their right upon Him is?" I replied, "Allah and His Apostle know best." The Prophet said, "Not to punish them (if they do so)." (Sahih Bukhari)

This hadith tells us that the right of ALLAH swt upon us is to believe in Him as the only God and to not prescribe any of His Godly characteristics to others like some Jews an Christianity. And if, a person believes in tawheed without any doubt, then ALLAH swt says that He will not punish him. It means that if someone's base is right, he has more chances to stand straight and strong.

The word tawheed is derived from arabic word wahhada / yuwahhidu which means to make something one. It means to strongly and totally believing in something to be one. According to the scholars, tawheed is further divided into three categories:

1. Tawheed Ar-Ruboobiyyah  (Oneness of Allahs Lordship)

As mentioned in Glorious Quran 35:3

Is there are creator other than Allaah that provides you with sustenance from the heavens and earth? There is nothing deserving of worship besides Him alone.

2. Tawheed Al-Uloohiyyah  (Oneness of Allahs sole right to all worship)

As mentioned in Glorious Quran 5:72

Indeed, whoever makes Shirk (associating partners in worship)  with Allaah, then Allaah has forbidden Paradise for him, his destination is the Fire, and there will never be any helper for the transgressors.

3.  Tawheed Al-Asmaa was-Sifaat  (Oneness of Allahs names and attributes)

Al-Quran 7:54

Indeed, your Lord is Allaah, Who created the heavens and earth in six days and then Istawaa  over the throne.

Therefore, saying that ALLAH is my lord is not enough. His right to be worshipped must also be believed in and also on His attributes. If any of these is not beleieved in than it would be shirk, and sin which will not be pardoned.

Al-Quran 5:72

Indeed, whoever makes Shirk  (associating partners in worship) with Allaah, then Allaah has forbidden Paradise for him, his destination is the Fire, and there will never be any helper for the transgressors.

I Hope the Concept of God In Islam is now clear in your mind.
