Of course, there is widespread speculation that the IS Caliphate cannot endure. Yet even if this attempt to restore an Islamic caliphate fails, it marks an historic, epochal shift for contemporary Islam and the world. Restoration of the caliphate and the "glory of Islam" is now seen by Muslims as attainable, and it is only a matter of time before ISIS firms up their rule, or some other jihadist group or alliance establishes an Islamic state.
